In 1992, my senior design project was a Collision Avoidance Vehicle (CAV) in the form of a remote control car. Sit the car in the middle of a room and it would never hit a wall, table, chair, etc. It was a tiny rendition of an #autonomous vehicle. Now, we are seeing how these vehicles are being produced and how they may be used in society. Yet, the process of creating such a vehicle is complex. There are varying levels of automation and #safety is something many are apprehensive about. Which is smart – safety, reliability, infrastructure, legal frameworks, and #datasecurity are all valid areas that continue to be addressed. The way the #automotiveindustry adjusts around these areas will be critical. #autonomousvehicles

#Mobile #robots are increasingly revolutionising the automation of intralogistics processes: their ability to move #autonomously within an environment, without the need for direct human control or fixed floor infrastructure, has opened up new #perspectives and opportunities. To ensure reliable and flexible #autonomous #navigation, vehicles are equipped with a combination of sensors, #software and algorithms that enable them to detect their surroundings and move around avoiding obstacles. Specifically, according to a study conducted by BlueBotics, more than 70% of respondents use natural navigation as a method of driving. In fact, Oppent vehicles use a a closed loop #odometric type of navigation, basing the measurement of the travel path on a #laser #scanner, without the need to install rails, magnetic receptors or other markers along the route.
