Big, heart felt thank you to everyone who made the trip to Vancouver to attend one of my workshops w/ NO/BS Events. I left feeling so invigorated. What they say about teaching is so true. “My students have taught me more than I could’ve ever taught them.” I’m back home, head still swimming full of ideas, new tools & frameworks, and ways I could’ve improved. Tuesday's Tip...have a clear objective! I went backpacking in North Cascades National Park last week and the trip provided a couple metaphors for creating a presentation. We took a 45-minute boat ride to our starting point on the trek but due to low water levels, the captain had to drop us a distance from our expected trailhead. Not having a clear map of that area - and failing to ask questions! - it took us over an hour of wandering till we found our trail. Which reminded me...if you start developing a presentation without a concise objective, it will take you more time to pull it together. Are you wanting to be persuasive or just informative with your content? What do you want your audience to know...to do...to feel? Can you express your outcome oriented objective in a sentence or two? Contrast our first day's hike with our last day...we had a clear objective to finish the journey and a detailed map of where we were going. Eight miles in under two hours is fairly challenging for old men carrying 30-40 pounds mostly uphill...we got to our destination quickly! Before you start pulling together content for your next presentation, make sure you have a clear objective first...it will save you time and contribute to your success.
