As industry’s understanding of composite materials increases so does the rate at which these materials are being used on applications such as the X-59, a joint venture between NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Lockheed Martin. Composite's light weight to strength properties make it an attractive material of choice for aircraft such as the X-59. Like all things in manufacturing, the more industry understands it, the more we use it, the more we procure it and the lower the cost becomes. We’re now seeing composites being used in everything from mobile phone cases right through to complex military products such as the X-59, the F-22 and space products such as Space X’s famous Falcon series of rockets. Check out this amazing video by Lockheed Martin of the assembly process of the new X-59. The use of composites within the nose and wing sections is impressive. The composite components, in particular the wing skins would have been manufactured in an ISO 8 cleanroom capable facility as a minimum using an Automated Filament Placement (AFP) capability and cured in an oven before being ready to be installed during the assembly process. The shape and contours of the wing are such that an AFP machine could easily achieve this without too much difficulty. When building a one-off product like the X-59 organisations such as NASA and Lockheed Martin generally like to use well known and established materials to reduce the risk and costs involved during the manufacturing, assembly and testing phase. Overall, the X-59 has over 22% of its design manufactured from composite materials. Notice the protective mats that are used to protect the structure during instalment. Unfortunately, accidents do happen, and these protective mats will protect the composite parts from dropped tools etc during the installation process. Best of luck with the trials NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Lockheed Martin. The foreign trade fair program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection enables German companies to participate in trade fairs around the world with funding. In addition to particularly attractive prices, further benefits await companies that take the opportunity to present themselves in an official German pavilion. Next year, companies from the #drone economy can benefit from this funding program and take part in XPONENTIAL Show 2025 at particularly favourable conditions. North America's leading trade fair for #unmanned systems and #robotics on land, at sea and in the air will take place from May 19 to 22, 2025 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. Participation in the German Pavilion also enables start-ups and smaller companies from the #UAS industry to present themselves in the USA, make valuable contacts overseas and take their first steps in the potentially attractive US market. If you have any questions about XPONENTIAL in Houston, please contact the UAV DACH office (geschaeftsstelle@uavdach.org). Information about participating in the German Pavilion in Houston is available at https://lnkd.in/eWVpT_Ys

🚀 Exciting news from Hamburg! Nicolas Maximilian Grünfelder has just presented his interesting work at the DLR conference in the session SynTrac – Synergies of Highly Integrated Transport Aircraft: "Investigation of damping and tuning effects of auxetic structures in load-bearing components under static and dynamic loads". His research delves into the fascinating world of auxetics and investigates the effects of different mesostructures on energy absorption and dissipation. This is the first step towards the use of auxetic structures in load-bearing aircraft components. #DLRK2024 #Auxetics
