Running an advocacy organization is a demanding enough gig to begin with. Every President or Executive Director knows that feeling of brushing their teeth before bed and remember those website updates they planned to make that afternoon. (Cue the expletives) 😄 What if someone told you it doesn't need to be that hard? What if you could go through your whole year focusing on running the organization and your website would magically run in the background? You'd call them a liar. So would we. Running a website is not magic, but it is hard work. We've made it our work so that you can focus on what's important - making a difference for those living with rare conditions. We'll take the whole thing off of your plate, take direction regarding updates, and we'll regularly meet each month to talk strategy. Over time, your website will become an extra team member, soliciting donations, sharing your message, welcoming new families, inviting researchers, and attracting interest from future industry partners. Roots & Wings is an incredible non-profit organization dedicated to supporting youth aging out of foster care. The statistics speak for themselves: - More than 1 in 5 will become homeless within 18 months of emancipating. - Almost 50% of inmates in our prison systems have spent time in the foster care system. - Only half of aged-out foster youth obtain their GED or High School diploma by age 19. - Just 6% go on to earn a 2- or 4-year degree. In 2023, Roots & Wings members defied the odds: - 100% have a High School diploma. - 94% were employed. - 88% maintained a savings account. - 81% attended an educational, vocational, or certificate program. Another year, another "No" to a grant. After hearing it so many times, you'd think I’d be used to it by now, but each "No" still hits hard. Maybe it’s because I know what’s at stake—the chance to show people that their mistakes don’t define them, but what they do afterward does. We talk about "Second Chances" all the time, but the truth is, many individuals never even had a "first chance." They’re caught in a cycle of survival, just trying to make it in a state where survival often feels impossible, especially when more than half the year is cold. The uphill battle we face in reentry is daunting, but it can be won—other states are doing better. So why can’t we? Why is it so hard to get the support we need when we know the facts? Around 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. has a criminal record. That record creates barriers—employment, housing, and more. Without proper support, breaking free from the revolving door of survival mode feels unreachable. Yet, every "No" is a reminder of how much work we still need to do—and I refuse to give up. We're here to change lives. We're here to ensure that "Second Chances" become real, not just words. Here’s the truth about philanthropy… Small foundations might not make headlines, but their impact on grassroots philanthropy is both profound and inspiring. These organizations focus on specific communities, provide them with essential supplies and targeted financial assistance to those who need it the most. Despite facing limitations such as low funding and little recognition, they bring change with their passion and commitment. Their efforts, often supported by local volunteers, not only bolster vulnerable areas but also raise awareness about critical issues that larger entities might overlook. It is local volunteers who join them and strengthen vulnerable communities and highlight major issues, which is often missed by larger organizations. Next time you hear of a small foundation, consider lending your support or voice. Most people are going to say there is no magic here. That 1-1 connection happens ALL THE TIME - so why are we making a big fuss about it?? But in my experience, RARELY are we taking the time to truly connect with each other. 🤦♀️ To get down to the bones and find each others "why" for our work. 🤦♂️ We are bogged down in the scramble for fundraising $$. 🤦♀️ The struggles of board management/engagement. 🤦♂️ The horror that can be creating a social media strategy that imparts impact AND gets people fired up. We wear too many hats and so we forgot how we got to this work, what it means to us and our Why for continuing to fight for a better world. Hive Chats are a simple and personal moment to reflect.
