Here's a picture of intern Alex starting his first week 15 years ago. Goofy photo aside, it really was a game changer. As somebody who now has the benefit of hindsight to recognize how important internships and mentors were early in my career, I'm really proud of the investments Leaf Home is making in talent development. - Internships with formal project assignment and evaluation - Self-paced educational curriculum - Formal mentorships - Leadership development program Ten years after that picture was taken, I was leading marketing for the same company, only it was 10x larger and coming off a successful exit. Leaders: investing in young professionals isn't just a benevolent pay-it-forward concept, it's critical to developing the pipeline of talent needed to sustain growth.

I always find myself self reflecting after work travel…sitting in my thoughts on an airplane brings me comfort as a leader. Growth and comfort never co-exist. Traveling this week for work once again showed me how much I need to disconnect to connect. The next time you meet with someone, leave your phone out of sight. The message? You’re here, you’re valued, and this moment matters. Our summer interns showed me how creativity is the heartbeat of human innovation, the force that drives progress and transformation across all fields of business. It is the spark that ignites the imagination, leading to the creation of art, literature, technology, and solutions to complex problems. "Women make bad managers" I've heard this comment repeatedly throughout my career, and I can't disagree more. My very first managers in a corporate environment were Tina Janetzko, MBA, PMP Rebecca Nichols-Maystead during my summer internship at Grainger in 2013. Without their coaching and mentorship, I don't think I would be where I am today. They did a few things that set me up for success in my career. They: 1. Taught me how to network authentically.  2. Helped me navigate "creating my own resources."  3. Paired me up with MBA interns (I was an undergrad intern) so I could learn from peers with more experience. 4. Spent hours coaching me on public speaking (something I was terrified of doing). I now consider this former weakness a strength. 5. Provided honest and helpful feedback throughout the summer internship program. Ever since, I've sought out working with strong women and have had many incredible female colleagues and managers. Let's normalize crediting the many incredible female managers out there and stop saying, "Women make bad managers." 

Here's to all the interns on National Intern Day! 🎉 Having built and led intern programs at multiple organizations, I can attest that it's truly one of the most rewarding initiatives I've been part of. I've been looking for something inspirational to share with our interns as they wrap up their last week. Steve Jobs said "your work is going to fill a large part of your life ... the only way to do great work is to love what you do." What makes us love our work evolves and changes as we progress. Early on for me, it was the opportunity to travel and learn. Now, it's having the license to do what I do best: drive business and lead teams that happily give 100 percent while expanding their skills. I find joy in being a good nurturer and a good leader. (And I know what a bad leader looks like. They're the reason people don't stick around.) I thrive on being a "fixer" and delivering excellence. And I've grown to relish a deadline that challenges me. To all the interns out there: look to do what you love right now and be open to what you might love tomorrow.
