🛠 Local solutions to local issues. 🏫 That was the dominant message coming out of the Seattle University (SU) Conversations series with the newly elected members of the Seattle City council, earlier this week. 💡 Expectations are high for the city council in Seattle, which for the first time in nearly a century has six new members concurrently. I had the chance to listen in on the new city council's governance initiatives and how local leaders can tackle the concerns and issues their districts and the city face. 🔗 Learn more about events hosted by the Department of Public Affairs and Nonprofit Leadership: https://lnkd.in/gfHtrZRz #seattleu #seattleuniversity #publicpolicy #localissues #localgovernment #localgov #seattle #citymanagement #publicadministration #publicadmin

Professor and Director, The Center for Business Civic Engagement, GMU - Schar School of Policy and Government, Co-Founder, The Intelligent Automation Initiative, VA Academic Intelligent Automation Community of Practice
"CAMPAIGNING FOR THE CONSTITUTION" kicks off this summer's "Campaign Management" course at George Mason University - Schar School of Policy and Government. Our speaker was Dr. Michael Cornfield, a Senior Fellow at The GWU Center for Excellence in Public Leadership. His research and consulting practice focuses on “simulated summits,” three-hour table-top exercises to enhance the political narrating and negotiating skills of students and mid-level government and corporate officers. He is the author of two books: Politics Moves Online: Campaigning and the Internet and The Civic Web: Online Politics and Democratic Values, co-edited with David M. Anderson. He addressed the class on two subjects: 1. The campaign for the U.S. Constitution (and lessons learned); 2. The evolution of "Political Consulting" as a profession. Dr. Cornfield was terrific! And we all learned from your presentation. Thank you.

I am always honored when asked to participate and or speak in DC. I am very patriotic and love been a citizen of the United States and take my citizenship as a responsibility and as a privilege. I always feel unworthy and a little bit of the imposter syndrome. I just keep saying to myself, I may not be the best person but I keep showing up and thats galf the battle. I show up so my ethnic community has visibility, has a voice and has some advocacy in DC. I invite Pacific Islanders to join me in DC, we need more people involved. May 13 I will be on a panel that will address that the Biden-Harris Administration is redoubling its efforts to support Black, Latino, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native Hawaiian, Native American, women, and veteran small business owners. From international matchmaking and business counseling, to direct funding for communities across the United States -- there is exciting work underway to help support new and existing AA & NH/PI entrepreneurs. For instance, in Fiscal Year 2023, the U.S. Small Business Administration delivered $52.4 billion in capital, disaster relief, and bonding to small businesses and disaster-impacted communities across America, with expanded funding for minority- and women-owned businesses. Over the past year, the U.S. Department of Commerce has expanded offices and staffing in the Indo-Pacific, which has already helped U.S. AA & NH/PI companies expand sales and build commercial partnerships. Three million businesses are owned by AA & NH/PIs employing five million people with annual revenues of more than $1 trillion. This panel will explore opportunities and challenges for AA & NH/PI small businesses, despite record levels of funding, support, and services. It was moved to Walter E. Washington Convention Center because VP Kamala Harris will be attending.

Grateful to be part of Professor Samir Mayekar's class at Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago - 'The Modern Urban Economic Development Playbook.' It was an enriching experience assisting in a course that delved into crucial aspects of inclusive economic development post-pandemic, i.e., to view economic development through a tri-sector lens for what’s gained by government, philanthropy, and business. My 15 years of working across the for-profit, public, and nonprofit sectors perfectly aligned with the coursework and helped me appreciate why this course is essential for policymakers. This course reiterates the importance of collaborating with various stakeholders and their indispensable role in shaping a city's future. Kudos to Samir for designing such a comprehensive curriculum that covered: - traditional and modern economic development tools for policymakers, - understanding economy of a city, - significance of zoning, - turning around decades of disinvestment, - how to create and operationalize an economic plan, - future of downtowns and post-pandemic new normal, - why arts and culture is an economic tool, - the role of corporates in community development and much more. Did I mention the fantastic speakers who shared practical insights about how to make things happen? The best part of the course was the final presentations, in which the various student groups created a comprehensive vision for an urban economic development project based on the above principles. The judges' engagement with the students is highly appreciated, and it was a unique experience for the students to present to "real-world" practitioners! I highly recommend this course for the current and future students at the University of Chicago! Working with Meghan Hanan and engaging with exceptional students whose active participation in the class made these ten weeks truly rewarding. Looking forward to applying these insights in future endeavors. #ModernUrbanEconomicDevelopment #MUED #InclusiveGrowth #EconomicDevelopment #CityPlanning 🌆📚
And that's a wrap for my Spring class at Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago "The Modern Urban Economic Development Playbook" - a new course I designed based on my experience in city government thinking about inclusive economic development and city economies post pandemic. The course was oversubscribed and covered a range of topics, including: - Economic development tools for policymakers - Why zoning matters - Creating and implementing an economic plan - Spurring investment in disinvested communities - The future of downtowns - Branding and marketing a city - Arts and culture as an economic driver - Corporate America's role in neighborhoods Thanks to the 50 students in class for your engagement these past 10 weeks and my very talented TAs Madhukar Battula, PMP and Meghan Hanan for all their help and hard work this quarter.

👤 In this edition of The POV, Konrad S. examines the professional history and presidential candidacy of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. His politics has continually sparked debate in a deeply polarised American election. Szumiński argues that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. emerges as a significant independent candidate due to his illustrious family background and contentious stance on vaccines. Despite his controversial views, Szumiński contends that Kennedy Jr.'s environmental activism and legal work demonstrate a commitment to change despite his polarising opinions, especially on vaccines, have alienated some voters. Yet, Szumiński believes Kennedy Jr. could attract disillusioned voters seeking an alternative to the current political dichotomy, positioning him as a potentially serious contender in the 2024 US election. #robertfkennedy #RFKjr #USA #2024election #uspolitics https://lnkd.in/e9UJMCj9

today is 107th birthday to one of my favorite U.S. President. His name was John Fitzgerald Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963), often referred to as JFK, was an American politician who served as the 35th president of the United States from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. He was the youngest person elected president. Kennedy served at the height of the Cold War, and the majority of his foreign policy concerned relations with the Soviet Union and Cuba. A Democrat, Kennedy represented Massachusetts in both houses of the United States Congress prior to his presidency. Historians and political scientists tend to rank Kennedy as an above-average president, and he is usually the highest-ranking president who served less than one full term. A 2014 survey from The Washington Post of 162 members of the American Political Science Association's Presidents and Executive Politics section ranked Kennedy 14th highest overall among the 43 persons who have been president, including then-president Barack Obama. The survey found Kennedy to be the most overrated U.S. president. A 2017 C-SPAN survey has Kennedy ranked among the top ten presidents. A 2023 Gallup, Inc. survey showed Kennedy with a retrospective approval rating of 90 percent, the highest of all U.S. presidents in recent history. Assessments of his policies are mixed

Busy but insightful first week in Washington D.C with Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs Washington Fellows Program. On our trip so far, we have kindly been hosted by the Bipartisan Policy Center and ventured to The Brookings Institution, PBS News Hour, Appalachian Regional Commission, and United States Senate. Key Takeaways Thus Far: (1) Bipartisanship is essential not only in D.C. but to the nation. “Crossing the aisle” plays a large role in productivity, building longstanding connections, and leadership among other things. (2) Ask questions! A leader is not someone who knows everything, but knows who to ask and who to delegate to. Throughout this week I have been able to learn the importance of asking questions, listening, researching, and doing my “homework” to better understand topics/policies. (3) Value each perspective and connection. You never know how your paths may recross with someone, who may be able to help you, and most importantly never forget “the other fellow may be right” (Senator Howard Baker) Looking forward to more learning during Week 2.

I'm always thrilled to see my fellow authors recognized for their achievements, and have long been interested in how the lessons from the transformation of the American West in the pasr may be applied in the future by countries which today share similarities in terrain, (lack of) infrastructure, unique "cattle cultures", indigenous armed ttibes, and massive mineral wealth and agricultural potential! Putting CONTINENTAL RECKONING on my "must-read" list.
We are beyond thrilled to share that Elliott West's CONTINENTAL RECKONING is one of the winners of the Bancroft Prize from Columbia University, one of the most distinguished awards in the field of American History. West's book was described by the jury as “a searing narrative explaining how the republic became a transcontinental nation,” through a “vast racial, social and political reordering” that redefined citizenship and the relationship between government, industry and the people.
