Check out this amazing visual representation of the educational technology ecosystem posted by the University of Waterloo! This mind map is a good way to help visualize what we teachers have access to regarding educational technology and what each type of technology is useful for. I love how this mind map is broken down into four categories: student collaboration, communication with students, creating and sharing content, and assessing student work. This is a useful tool for every teacher to keep on hand as it highlights many amazing technological tools. As technology grows and we find even more tools we can continue to add to this list, or even make our own versions of mind maps similar to this one. With so many educational technologies it is hard to keep track of them all, having them all written down in one place is a big help. Every now and then I am reminded why I love working in #HigherEd, especially in the #EdTech space. Working with BYU-Pathway Worldwide shows me that the real competition in this industry isn't the financially flush private school, not the state school down the street, nor the cheaper online school. The real competition is ignorance, poverty, and hunger. The true hallmarks of an excellent education are: - Learning how to learn, and loving it. - Knowing objective and subjective truths, and building upon them. - Being self-sufficient. - Contributing positively to your family and community. Ed Tech exists to augment and accelerate those brave enough to fight those demons, and to extend the reach of those who would elevate others around them to achieve their best. Does the education sector need any more buzzwords?! Today, I received an email from ISC Research introducing the terminology “PedTech”. My initial reaction: What on earth does that mean? If you’re interested, it’s a portmanteau of pedagogy and technology to discuss how the two can be linked. Buzzwords can be great to inspire innovation and drive focus towards new strategies. But they can also obscure real challenges and create hype without substance. To my friends in the education sector, I’d love to know your thoughts on the term “PedTech”. Will you be adding it to your ever-growing list of vocabulary?
