WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A PROCUREMENT SPECIALIST? If you’ve ever had the privilege of meeting with a Specialist, you will know it is inspirational. When we talk about a person having Specialist skills, we mean a person who chooses a career path, and who invests deeply in acquiring Knowledge and Skills. In the Procurement context, a Specialist will ignore other careers, and concentrate their time and energies mastering their field. Specialists make sacrifices to become exposed to high value, complex sourcing activities. These sacrifices include not investing long term in one organisation. They move around to gain experience in different settings, to learn different ways of thinking. Specialists value education. They don’t stop studying once they graduate. They enrol in courses, webinars and attend conferences, regardless of whether the learning is accredited. Specialists are constantly reading, to keep abreast of emerging thought. A Specialist’s goal is to attain strong foundation knowledge, to have depth of understanding beyond a typical Procurement person. Many Procurement officers can’t explain the difference between an RFQ and an RFP. A Specialist will ensure they understand Procurement Strategies in depth. It is the elements that form the bedrock on which specialist knowledge later sits. Once a Procurement Specialist has mastered foundation knowledge, they make an informed decision about which category in which to specialise. The category does not need to be a traditional category, such as Goods and Services, or ICT, or even process improvement. It can be a category formulated in their mind, based on their observation of where the Procurement market is going. A Specialist might observe AI is emerging to change the fundamental tasks of a Procurement officer, and position themselves in advance of the technology becoming mainstream. A Procurement Specialist unapologetically dedicates their Career focus to their category. More than anything in this World, they want to become among the best minds in their field. This is regardless of whether they could afford university, or are born with high intelligence, or whether they have to work ridiculously hard to reach that level of knowledge and skill. Procurement Specialists don’t just consume knowledge; they drive efficiency forward. They make the World a safer, fairer, better place. I built Nolan School of Procurement to be a bedrock of Foundation Skills. My life mission is to help people evolve into Procurement Specialists. If you haven't heard about our School, www.nolanschool.com - we're caring, we think differently, we're highly affordable, and we're super friendly. Just reach out! #procurement #procurementleaders

There’s a soaring demand for procurement professionals. In the UK there is an average increase in procurement vacancies of 8% year on year, and in 2024 alone there are thousands of vacancies in the Middle East. The problem here is more than ‘there aren’t enough procurement professionals’. I see the lack of procurement professionals as a symptom: Not enough is being done to market procurement. The profession already flies under the radar once you’re employed and going through the ranks in an organisation, but it’s often a complete unknown for those starting out in their careers or still in education. When we discussed this during our CIPS Futures Podcast, my co-host Emma Scott MCIPS and our guest, Stephen Day FCIPS from Kantar, proposed a sensible solution: start early, start with the schools. According to Stephen, there are many young people ready to get into employment but have never heard of procurement as a profession. He organises workshops, talks, and seminars for children still in school to promote procurement as a viable career path. He then follows up with mentorship and for students who are interested in pursuing procurement, he goes on to teach them how to navigate LinkedIn to build their careers. It’s an all-round approach that I think works really well to promote procurement in spaces where the knowledge or passion for procurement might be lacking. The discourse around attracting talents largely only targets established professionals who are perhaps reluctant to switch careers – But I think Stephen’s initiative is a refreshing and promising change from this. To quote Whitney Houston: ‘I believe the children are our future.’ I want to hear your thoughts - What are some ways we can attract more talent to our profession? #Procurement #SupplyChain #Careers

ℛℯ𝒷𝓊𝒾𝓁𝒹𝒾𝓃ℊ 𝓌𝒾𝓉𝒽 ℛℯ𝓈𝒾𝓁𝒾ℯ𝓃𝒸ℯ: 𝕌𝕡𝕤𝕜𝕚𝕝𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕘 & 𝕊𝕥𝕒𝕪𝕚𝕟𝕘 ℝ𝕖𝕝𝕖𝕧𝕒𝕟𝕥 One of the most important steps I took during my time off was 𝕦𝕡𝕤𝕜𝕚𝕝𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕘. The procurement field is constantly evolving, and I knew I needed to stay relevant. I enrolled in online courses, attended virtual conferences, and earned certifications that added value to my skill set. Staying engaged in this way also helped me maintain a sense of normalcy during the transition and ensured I stayed ahead in my career. A standout course for me was on advanced negotiation strategies. This course not only kept my negotiation skills sharp but also equipped me with innovative techniques to enhance procurement outcomes. Additionally, I continued to champion supplier diversity by engaging with diverse supplier communities and learning about their challenges and opportunities. This not only boosted my confidence but also made me a more attractive candidate as I started applying for jobs again. Tomorrow, I’ll talk about how networking played a crucial role in my journey back to procurement. #Procurement #ContinuousLearning #Upskilling #CareerDevelopment #SupplierDiversity #NegotiationSkills #AdvancedProcurement #ProcurementStrategies #StayAhead #CareerTransition #ProcurementLeadership

True. we should do more in Creating Awareness and Educating the younger ones. In Ghana the focus is more on the traditional professions like engineering, medicine, finance, IT and Law. PSCM in organizations is seen as a support function rather than a "Critical Component" of Business Strategy that drives Competitive Advantage, Cost Savings and Efficiency.

Strategic Supply Chain Expert in Logistics, Procurement & Inventory Management | Implementing Data-Driven Solutions for Seamless Operations & Cost Reduction
That's a good approach. However, many of us cannot access these many opportunities; firms should also be ready to integrate us into their environment. Relocating/sponsoring a professional should be relatively inexpensive, but consider the value you will get from them. We are ready to relocate.
