Today is World Suicide Preventation Day.
Today is dedicated to raising awareness about suicide, promoting mental health, and encouraging conversations that can save lives. Suicide is a global issue that claims nearly 700,000 lives annually, leaving behind shattered families, friends and communities.
The Theme for 2024: "Creating Hope Through Action". This year’s theme underscores the importance of taking meaningful steps to support those who may be struggling. By reaching out with empathy, listening without judgment, and providing access to mental health resources, we can create a ripple of hope in our communities.
Suicide is often the result of complex mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and trauma. It can also stem from feelings of isolation, financial hardship, or relationship problems. Many who are suffering don’t seek help because of the stigma around mental health, making it crucial that we foster an environment where people feel safe to speak up to remove the stigma.
How can you help?
👋🏻 Start a conversation - Ask someone how they’re really doing and listen without interrupting.
🤯 Know the signs - Feelings of hopelessness, withdrawal from social activities, drastic mood swings, or talk of self-harm, can be signs someone is in distress.
🧠 Promote mental health - Share resources such as crisis helplines, mental health services, and support groups in your community.
❤️ Take care of yourself - Supporting others starts with maintaining your own mental well-being.
Together on World Suicide Prevention Day, we can shine a light on a sensitive topic and ensure that no one feels they are alone in their struggle.
