Picture this: my first job out of the gate was at the Nelson Mandela Institute for Rural School. Fresh off my stint as the first female President of the SRC at Fort Hare University, I was ready to dive into the world of innovative thinking with this stellar team. And oh, what a ride it was! Now, let me take you back to one unforgettable adventure. We were on a mission to visit schools in the rural heartland, and boy, did we encounter some wild scenes. Deep in the forests of Mqanduli, we stumbled upon a school that was, well, more of a jungle gym than an actual building. Prefab structures were the name of the game, but this particular one had a surprise in store: asbestos. Yes, you heard that right – the stuff of nightmares straight out of an Erin Brockovich flick. But wait, it gets better (or worse, depending on your perspective). As we cautiously ventured into the classrooms, we learned that the real danger wasn't just the asbestos – it was the snakes. Apparently, these slithery friends liked to cozy up in the insulation when things got toasty in the afternoons. Needless to say, our interviews were cut short as we high-tailed it out of there faster than you can say "snake charmer." Jokes aside, that experience sparked a fire in me to question the very foundation of our education system. Are we really equipping our kids with the tools they need to conquer the world? Are we making the most of our resources to ensure meaningful learning experiences? These are the questions that keep me up at night – and I'm betting I'm not alone. So, where are the leaders with the big ideas? Who's ready to shake things up and ensure that every child has access to quality education? The clock is ticking, and it's high time we start hearing some answers. Are you with me? 🔥 #BTWYRU #Voting #education #EducationRevolution #InnovativeLeadership #SnakesInSchools

It's Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week (APAW)! 💡 Did you know... ➡ An estimated 7.8 million young people participate in afterschool programs yearly in the U.S. ➡ Over 850,000 highly skilled and valuable afterschool professionals work with young people during out-of-school time (OST). ➡ Research shows that afterschool professionals are the key to program quality that mitigates risk factors and positively impacts youth outcomes. ➡ Afterschool programs run by skilled professionals result in increased social and emotional skills, school attendance, and academic performance. Recognizing afterschool professionals isn't just about acknowledging their hard work; it's also about supporting their ongoing growth and development. Providing access to professional development opportunities, such as those offered by the Forum’s Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality, is crucial for enhancing skills and effectiveness in working with young people. There is no question about it, mentorship and education are key to helping unlock opportunities and potential. This is true across the board, but wow is it transformative when trying to address inequity. Proud to see the brilliant minds of my former KIPP colleagues leading this conversation. #mentoringmatters
Earlier today two inspiring KIPP alumni, Nyeka Artiaga and Rashan Williams spoke on the #AspenIdeas panel discussion "Dreaming Our Futures — A Fireside Chat on Mentorship and Education" introduced by KIPP Foundation board member, Carrie Walton Penner. Research shows that young people thrive when they have a sense of purpose in school and work—and the right mentors and guides are crucial in helping them find it. Nyeka, a dedicated Special Education Assistant at KIPP Vida Preparatory Academy, and Rashan, a passionate student at Montclair State University, shared insights on how they are empowering youth to navigate the challenges on their path to adulthood. They were joined by the legendary Hip-Hop Artist, Actor, and Activist Common, and the visionary Co-Founder and CEO of Reconstruction, Kaya Henderson. We're feeling inspired by their stories and insights! 💫 #KIPPAlumni #MentorshipMatters Aspen Ideas Walton Family Foundation

🎙My Candidate Interview Is Live I would love to hear your thoughts and input! As a passionate advocate for our schools and a candidate for the Pembroke School Committee, I recently had the opportunity to share my vision and priorities for the future of Pembroke's education with The Local Seen Government Services Here are some highlights! Budget Priorities and Constraints: I firmly believe that budget discussions should begin with the insights of our school building principals. Their direct experience with the needs of our students and teachers is invaluable. I am dedicated to finding creative solutions for funding gaps and prioritize the wellness and safety of our students and staff in all budget decisions. Impact of Decreasing Enrollment: Even as we face declining enrollment, it's crucial to recognize the significant increase in per-pupil funding rates. This underscores the continuous need for increased funding, particularly to support the growing mental health needs of our students. Vocational Schooling and Local Revenue: I propose innovative ideas, such as kayak and canoe rentals and food truck internships, to enhance vocational training opportunities. It's important to me that we seek community feedback on these initiatives. Special Education: With my strong background in special education, I understand the importance of individualized education plans based on comprehensive evaluations. I acknowledge the increasing demand for special education services and am committed to meeting these needs. General Philosophy on Education and Community Involvement: I am a proponent of data-informed decision-making and actively seek community input to ensure our educational priorities meet the evolving needs of our students. My dedication to our community, innovative approach to addressing challenges, and commitment to putting students first make me a strong candidate for the Pembroke School Committee. I believe in supporting a future where every child in Pembroke has the opportunity to thrive. I encourage you to make your voice heard in the upcoming elections. Together, we can make a difference for the future of our children and our community. https://lnkd.in/eyz326pe #KatrinaDelaney #PembrokeSchoolCommittee #EducationForAll #CommunityFirst #PembrokePride

Does anyone remember the scene in Apollo 13 where they are testing and retesting the lunar module start up sequence to access more amps? This is what we need to do in education continuously, reexamine what we do, ask 'why do we do things this way?' and 'is there a better way?'. What would happen if lessons were shortened by 10 minutes to enable something else to happen for example?
It is long overdue. Recognizing that the curriculum is key and that not all children have the same motivations, interests, and skills is the beginning of getting it right for the future. I am sure that many will have come across children and young people who are seen to ‘need’ an alternative provision because they don’t fit the curriculum and examination pathways for the majority. Why should children have to go elsewhere? Why should some children be deprived from learning alongside their friends and peers because schools are not meeting their needs? Inclusion is about every child feeling they belong and that their needs and interests matter. We are so fortunate in Luton that many of our schools recognise this. They value inclusion and work to adapt and accommodate. A great quote from one of our Headteachers ‘School readiness is not about children being ready for school - but about the school being ready to meet the child’s needs.’
