Seattle is known for its headquarters, Amazon, and Microsoft. The Central District, or the CD, is not as well known but economically and culturally just as important. #BlackBusiness #Seattle #CD

"For the new worker-owners at Wine Source, Baltimore provides a strong community of worker cooperatives to support its business. BRED is instrumental in making that possible, according to a number of sources who spoke with Baltimore Fishbowl. "“I love Baltimore, but … so much of the basis of the city is in exclusion, redlining is in racial segregation,” Christa Daring said. “I think because of that, it has been necessary for communities to come together and band together. And create alternative economic systems for a very long time.”" -Baltimore Fishbowl https://lnkd.in/evZ34TdY #workercoop #cooperatives #cooperativeeconomics #solidarityeconomy #economicdemocracy #democracyatwork #businessowners #sellabusiness #successionplanning #exit #legacy #employeeownership #nonextractivefinance #commerciallending #commerciallending #businessloans #coopfinance #nonextractivefinance #bredbaltimore #seedcommons

Cannot stop thinking about the Detroit People's Food Co-op since I first learned about it. An except from the Facebook post that enlightened me: "What is a food coop? A food co-op is a grocery store that’s owned by its member/owners as opposed to a grocery store such as Kroger or Meijer which has corporate ownership or an independent grocery store owned by a family or individual. In a food co-op members have a role in shaping the store culture, operations, and product standards. Detroit People’s Food Co-op is democratically controlled by its member/owners. Each member/owner can only purchase one ownership share and has one vote. Although food co-ops, like all businesses, must have revenues that exceed operating costs if they are to be sustainable, food co-ops prioritize community well-being over making profits for member/owners." https://lnkd.in/e3epEDRi

Happy Friday! Today we're sharing another community ownership example that is transforming food access and possibly more in Detroit: A spring article in the Detroit Metro Times by journalist Steve Neavling covered a story about a new Black-owned and operated grocery store, the Detroit People’s Food Co-Op, spearheaded by the Detroit Black Community Food Sovereignty Network. The store features fruit and vegetables from four Black-owned farms, and many of the products are made by local food entrepreneurs in Michigan. But - while access to healthy, local food for BIPOC residents and reliable distributors for local Black farmers is a game changer for a city where nearly 70% of its residents are considered food insecure, this co-op's 2,740+ members are empowered to vote in board elections, share future profits, and be elected to committees with larger goals like fighting for affordable housing or disability rights. This is why community ownership matters. ➡ Read the full article to learn more: https://lnkd.in/etQcE9xb

This week, locally owned and loved restaurants received a timely winter boost to rebuild and retain staff. One hundred thousand dollars in grants were awarded to 10 small, independent restaurants from the #cooksforcarolina dinner series through Explore Asheville’s #alwaysashevillefund! The 13 curated dinners taking place last November and December across the Crescent City, were organized by more than 20 esteemed New Orleans chefs to provide crucial financial assistance to small, independent restaurants in Asheville and Buncombe County. The series highlighted the connection between the two Southern culinary destinations, featuring collaborations between New Orleans chefs and North Carolina culinary talents Jacob Sessoms, Peyton Barrell, Brian Canipelli, Trevor Payne, and Matt Dawes. Local participating restaurants included The Bull and Beggar, Baby Bull, Gourmand, Cucina24, Table, All Day Darling, Tall Johns, and Good Hot Fish received $10,000 grants, in addition to The Bush Farmhouse in Black Mountain and Zella’s Deli in Swannanoa for their hardship. Through the Always Asheville Fund and the Cooks for Carolina initiative, Explore Asheville has now allocated more than $1.3 million in emergency grants to local businesses, helping preserve the creative spirit of our deeply rooted mountain community and assisting in our long-term recovery!

It’s amazing to see big-name chefs come onto Substack. Content used to be kind of a losing — or at best, break even — play for restaurant chefs: It's expensive to create and difficult to monetize at any meaningful scale outside of cookbooks. And for many (not the Ottolenghi’s of the food world, but for many of the chefs who primarily earn through their restaurants) cookbooks themselves are not always a major financial win. That they can immediately monetize via Substack subscriptions absolutely changes the game for restaurant chefs. Chefs/restaurant owners: If you want to talk about starting your own paid subscription newsletter. Hit me up and let's figure it out. Message me here or email me: hdc@hillarydixlercanavan.com
