Huge Congrats to Pete November, CEO of Ochsner Health for being named as one of the “Great Leaders in Healthcare.”
He absolutely is one of the best leaders out there. In fact, Pete is one of the reasons I wrote my book, The Seismic Shift in Leadership.
While serving as Pete’s executive coach, I got to see first hand how he created connection by building a positive environment based on trust and safety.
During his team meetings, Pete would
⭐️ Begin with a personal question each person had to answer to connect on a deeper level
⭐️ Listen first, speak last. He never dominated the conversation.
⭐️ Allow for mistakes to drive innovation. He encouraged taking risks, thinking outside the box, and solving problems creatively.
⭐️ Let his team soar by empowering them vs micromanaging. He would encourage his team to try new things and figure it out together. Then he would ask what barriers he could remove and how he could best support them.
Pete is the embodiment of connection.
Grateful to work with such a role model in leadership!

Five years ago, my professional life was vastly different from what it is today. Back then, I was at the helm of one of the largest operating room departments in my state, immersed in the day-to-day challenges and triumphs of surgical care. It was a role that taught me the intricacies of healthcare delivery, patient care, and team management under high-pressure conditions. Each day brought new lessons in resilience and leadership.
Fast forward to today, and my career has taken a transformative leap into the realms of healthcare strategy and improvement discussions with top-ranked healthcare organizations. This shift was driven by my passion for enhancing healthcare delivery and making a broader impact on the industry.
Transitioning from managing bustling operating suites to strategizing with healthcare leaders wasn't simple. It required building on the deep knowledge and operational expertise I gained at the ground level and expanding it to understand the larger healthcare ecosystem. My focus shifted from the unique needs of surgical operations to the systemic challenges and opportunities in healthcare at a macro level.
Today, I find myself in rooms with thought leaders and innovators, discussing how we can collectively improve coordination across various departments and facilities to ensure a cohesive and efficient care delivery system. We explore methods to empower patients to take an active role in their care, fostering engagement and ownership of their health outcomes. Moreover, we strategize on creating robust support systems and organizational goals that address the unique needs of diverse populations, including specialized areas like maternal healthcare.
The journey from direct patient care to healthcare strategy has been exhilarating and deeply fulfilling. It underscores a key message that career growth often requires us to step out of our comfort zones and embrace broader perspectives. As I continue to engage with leaders and change-makers in the healthcare industry, I am reminded of the importance of our collective efforts in shaping a future where healthcare is more integrated, patient-focused, and inclusive.
Thank you, Denise Mihal, Drs. Pamela Oliver, & David Priest,MD,MPH,FIDSA for sharing your journey with others so we can make a larger impact in healthcare!
Excited to be a panelist speaker at Southern California's Executive Roundtable next week where I join other insightful leaders to discuss common challenges we face in our industries and gain fresh perspectives on innovative solutions to solve them.
I look forward to the exchanging of ideas and sharing my thoughts on industry trends, leadership strategies, and best practices.

Our RadiantLeader.co Member Spotlight for June is Melanie Sollid-Penton, Senior Vice President at integrated healthcare communications agency GCI Health.
Mel participated in the most recent cohort of Momentum, our mindful leadership course, so I asked her to share her personal approach to leadership and the impact Momentum has had, both on her and her team. Here's an excerpt from our conversation about the power of presence in leadership.
Kristen: How do you, in your own mind, define what it means to be a Radiant Leader?
Melanie: Radiance is to be lit from within. So you have to know who you are, what you have to offer and your philosophy about people. All of that has to be in place.
I think you have to be centered, too, to radiate. Like you’ve said, I am responsible for myself. Right? I'm the only person that I can control. And one thing I learned in Momentum is that I can only control what is happening in this moment. So that's pretty finite. Nothing outside of now is a guarantee.
But if you are taking those moments and meeting them with grace and responding thoughtfully to situations and coming from a place of calm and centeredness, I believe you're going to radiate. And as you do, you attract people who are like-minded in that centeredness... or who are craving it.
--
I love the way you lead, Mel. Thanks for being part of the Radiant Leader community, and for letting us spotlight you this month.
Folks interested in learning more about Momentum can do so here: https://lnkd.in/eZy6RJwR. We just scheduled our Fall cohort dates and registration is now OPEN. 🔥
