Take it from pizza industry legend Fran Garcia: A menu with too many options can be overwhelming for both the customer and the kitchen staff. Garcia, who co-founded Artichoke Basille in New York with his equally legendary cousin, Sal Basille, and also owns Sally Boy's, doesn't believe in sides and salads. As he told PMQ's Charlie Pogacar, “We don’t even do toppings. We have a limited menu, and everything we do, we try to do it really well." That might not be the right business model for every pizza shop out there, but it has worked beautifully for Artichoke Basille. According to Placer.ai, the top chains by visit growth in the U.S. from May 2023 to May 2024 include: 1. Chili's Bar & Grill (26.3%) 2. Warby Parker (21%) 3. Five Below (18.6%) 4. Chipotle Mexican Grill (15.1%) 5. Dollar General (14.2%) 6. In-N-Out Burger (13.6%) 7. Dollar Tree (12.3%) The most common were value-oriented retailers, such as Five Below and Dollar Tree, highlighting the popularity of budget-friendly options. Notably, Chili's topped the list with a significant visit increase, driven by their Big Smasher Burger promotion, which also offered great value. Years ago, I posted about testing a pizza served at Tim Horton's. A few people laughed at the thought of a coffee and doughnut chain serving pizza. Fast forward to the present and, after 2 years of testing, Tim's is finally planning to add flatbread pizza to its menu nationally. This is a great example of test and learn, not to mention patience and keeping focus on a longer-term objective of growing afternoon and dinner traffic.
