Lionesses goalkeeper and vice-captain, Mary Earps won the Golden Glove award at the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ . However, neither that nor England’s best finish at a Women’s World Cup was enough to get, Nike to sell her replica shirts. Before the World Cup, Nike decided that it wouldn’t be making Earps’ goalkeeper kit available for retail sales. The brand's call, based on its commercial strategy, drew criticism from fans, celebrities, and even Earps herself who called the decision ‘hugely hurtful’. Earps raised the issue with Nike and even offered to fund the production herself, but to no avail. Her Manchester United shirt sold out last season and was the third best-selling overall. Fans and small retailers decided to make their own versions of Earps’ jersey to show support. A petition was launched to persuade Nike into a U-turn, which has crossed the 120k mark and the number continues to grow. Earps aka 'Mary Queen of Stops' echoed her frustration: It’s a very scary message that’s being sent to goalkeepers worldwide that “you’re not important”. Nike issued a statement promising to address the matter in future tournaments. But I’ll tell you, this is far from over... Manufacturers may argue that if they had agreed to sell the England goalkeeper’s shirt, then they would have had to do the same for the other countries they supply — which would probably have sold far less. Not every squad has a Mary Earps. Was it too much to ask for every shirt to be available for purchase at a World Cup? Shouldn't they 'Just do it!' Why would brands want to be invested in the sport in a half-hearted manner? You are either in it or not. PS: Though Nike is facing the heat, their counterparts adidas and PUMA Group followed a similar route of not selling goalkeeper replica jerseys.
