The origin stories of many of the world’s best players often include time spent with the ball outside of structured team training environments, and players learning to train on their own is a vital part of player development. With that in mind, NorCal Premier Soccer invited former USWNT star Yael Averbuch West to speak about creating a homework program on our latest Club Development Webinar. Averbuch West, General Manager and Head of Soccer Operations for 2023 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) champions NJ/NY Gotham FC, is also the founder of Techne Futbol, an app that helps players train on their own.

The issue of inadequate provision for young, aspiring goalkeepers in grassroots football is a crucial one. While outfield players receive structured training and support, goalkeepers are frequently forgotten. I find this strange given every team has at least one! Financial Burden: Unlike outfield players, young goalkeepers often rely on their parents to fund their development. Specialist goal keeping coaches, equipment, and kit expenses can add up significantly. Lack of Resources: Grassroots clubs and leagues tend to prioritise outfield positions, leaving goalkeepers with fewer resources. There’s a need for more goalkeeper-specific training programs and coaching staff. Developmental Gaps: Goalkeepers require unique skills and training. Without proper guidance, their development may suffer, impacting their overall performance and confidence. Inclusivity: To create a level playing field, grassroots football should invest in goalkeeper development equally. This includes accessible coaching, equipment, and opportunities. Efforts should be made to address these disparities, ensuring that young goalkeepers receive the support they need to thrive in grassroots football. Let’s advocate for a more inclusive and supportive environment for all aspiring players, regardless of their position on the field. 🌟 #gkunion #grassrootsfootball #goalkeeping #development

Managing Director at AFCAS - The Association of Football Coaches & Scouts - Experienced Premier League and International Level Chief Scout
A quote from the Former England International, and Nottingham Forest Football Club European Cup winner Trevor Francis who sadly passed away last year. I met Trevor at matches a few times over the years when he was doing match commentary and was lucky enough to have a few good chats with him. "There's nothing worse than seeing good football....... played badly" was something we discussed. The point he was making was that its disappointing when you see a team that attempts to build-up play but over-plays and loses possession. Build-up play means exactly that, build-up. Not over-playing! There must be a point to a team's build-up play, there must be direction and eventually penetration in the play. When you watch a team play next, focus on their play and see if you can identify what is the aim of the team's build-up play, or is the team simply playing at the back without any direction?
