I was laid off a couple weeks ago. There, I said it. I’ve been hesitant to post, because honestly, I’m devastated. Heartbroken is an understatement. When I joined Skift 3.5 years ago, I was given the opportunity - and the trust - to rebuild the marketing program from the ground up. The travel industry was just barely entering its post-Covid era, and we were no longer focused on simply keeping the ship afloat - we wanted to strategically navigate to new, untapped destinations. And sail, we did. Looking back, I’m so proud of what we accomplished. The team looks totally different than when I first joined, just two people holding down the fort, to now a well-oiled, cross-functional machine with some of the smartest marketers I know. It was an honor to lead you, and even more so to learn from each and every one of you. Together, we launched new products, acquired business lines, rebranded existing ones, took Skift to new heights with unprecedented data analysis, A/B testing, a CRM overhaul, and so much more. We expanded our marketing channels, owning all parts of the funnel from acquisition to retention to win-back, across 8 websites, countless email campaigns, 14 newsletters, 5 podcasts, 4 paid subscriptions, 10 hybrid events (per year!), social media, paid advertising, public relations, and SEO. And to be fair, I’m probably forgetting a few things. At a small company, you wear lots of hats - and you learn a lot. With that in mind, I’m sad, but I’m also grateful. Thank you Rafat, Jason, Carolyn and Michael for taking a chance on me, for trusting me to own and lead the marketing function. I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. To the travel industry, thank you for showing me the passion that comes from working in a field you love. And finally, most importantly: Thank you to my colleagues, the real MVPs, the thing I’ll miss most about Skift. Business is business. Layoffs happen. But at the end of the day, we’re still people - these human connections can and will endure. Please keep in touch. I'm always here if you need anything. Looking ahead, I’m giving myself grace. I’m letting myself feel all the feels, but I’m excited for what’s next. To anyone who’s hiring, I’m looking for a director-level marketing role. My specialties are subscriptions and events in the media space, but I’m open to any job that will allow me to learn and grow. I’d love to continue leading a team, as it has always been one of my favorite parts of the job, and I’d like to remain remote or hybrid in the Baltimore/DC-area, but I’m open to travel and would consider relocating for the right fit. I didn't get a job. And while it's obviously sad news, I am feeling extremely grateful to Dermott Bradley and Booking.com for their top-notch hiring process. Let me explain. Throughout the last 4 months, I've applied to 200+ positions, and, boy, I've seen it all - automatic rejections, ghosting, applications going into a void, you name it. The hiring process with Booking gave off a drastically different image. I made it to the final 4th step, and in each step, I've been given a set of clear and transparent expectations about what's going to happen at this step. I had highly knowledgeable conversations with team members who asked me interesting and tough (in a good way) questions. I was given detailed feedback after every round. After passing to the finals, I felt the company and hiring people were interested for me to succeed. I felt taken care of (an unprecedented luxury on a job search journey). Yes, in the end, I didn't get it. Another person got the job. I got outcompeted fair and square. But what I got is an example of a great hiring process and a faith that even in the tough market you can hire people decently. Great job, Booking.com. Who knows, maybe we'll see each other again in the future.
