📩 How I got my first return offer from Deutsche Bank 💰 As many students enquired how I got my first ever internship offer at investment banks, I would break it down into 3 major stages: 1. Being shortlisted for interviews 2. Standing out during interviews 3. Securing the return offer 1️⃣ Being shortlisted for interviews Before submitting my summer internship applications, I ensured all the work experience (using quantity and work achievement to compensate the lack of brand name internships), extra-curricular activities (joint university student association and volunteering projects initiated by myself), awards (Champion in business case competitions) and intangibles (will talk more on this next time) on my CV are already written in the most optimal way. Besides, I’ve attended almost every bank’s early insights programs, and successfully left a good impression at Deutsche Bank’s DB Academy program. All these qualified me for an interview. 2️⃣ Standing out during interviews As I never had transaction banking related experience prior to the interview, the interviewers asked a lot of questions regarding my passion about the industry and my future career planning (they’re trying to assess whether I’m treating this as a back-up offer). Thankfully I have done a lot of prep work before the interviews – Documenting information from DB Academy’s roadshow that is not Google-able, and having deep-dive discussion with my connections understanding the industry (from networks built through crazy networking at college). At the end, getting the summer internship job offer after passing through stress testing with my intangibles. 3️⃣ Securing the return offer In that summer, there were 3 students, among 1,000+ candidates, shortlisted for the internship. On the first day, I noticed the other 2 interns were majoring in quantitative finance, one of which was even double majoring in risk management. As a non-finance major student, I panicked. I decided to secure the return offer through unconventional ways. On top of purposefully networking and starting the final project as late as possible (refer to our Instagram reels for detailed rationale), I also initiated a project and was the only intern being invited to present my work in management meeting. At last, I got the return offer successfully. However, I was greedy and subsequently rise to the challenge by applying to American investment banks. (to be shared in upcoming posts) 👨🏽💻 If you want to receive the best support at every stage of the recruitment cycle, find out more here: https://lnkd.in/grFSDbTX Career Hackers FS Coaching

🤯 Giving up my Deutsche Bank return offer and securing J.P. Morgan’s return offer? 😼 2 weeks ago I shared how I got my first ever internship and return offer from an investment bank. Originally, I could’ve just chill, lay back and look forward to my first day of work after graduation. However, the greedy part of myself wasn’t satisfied with working at an European bank, I decided to rise to the challenge and set my eyes at the American banks, ended up getting J.P. Morgan’s summer internship offer. As such, I decided to give up the return offer I obtained from Deutsche Bank. As there’s no turning back, I could only work on repeating the success at JPM. 😰 Yet, on the first day of work, I realized the other interns were much more competitive than the previous year – some spoke German and Latin, some taught coding at Microsoft, some came with exotic cultural background. And I am still the least technical intern, as always. To be frank, I was a bit worried. 💰 However, this time around, I knew what exactly would happen in the 10 weeks, and therefore could still get the return offer. Today I will share 3 of the key success factors: 1. Visibility 2. Proactiveness 3. Intangibles 1️⃣ Visibility Working 24/7 at your own cube is never enough to help you secure a return offer at an American bank. Therefore, I strategically planned the coffee chats with all the key decision makers on our return offer. The art lies in how to gain enough quality visibility without being considered a networking freak and not working for the team by your boss. 2️⃣ Proactiveness While I was interning at the Sales team which does not require programming skills, I noticed there were a lot of time-consuming sales admin tasks. As such, I proactively automated one of the most time consuming tasks. Time is money, especially for salespersons. So I reduced the “money” my colleagues spent on non-money making activities, such that they can focus their energy on making more money for JPM. 3️⃣ Intangibles Mid-way through the internship, my team’s VP told me to prepare for our team head’s birthday (This is definitely a golden opportunity for interns to shine every year). Apart from hosting a team lunch and birthday cake, I prepared a mini magic show making that year’s celebration extra memorable. These skills also indirectly reflect my ability to manage client relationships (of course, I have invested time in these skills for a long time instead of just pulling an all nighter). 👨🏻💻 Definitely there’re a lot more strategies and nitty gritty details I executed in order to secure the return offer. Two months ago, I joined the Citi Bank freshman discovery program, where I was introduced to different avenues in the company and the finance world. It has been an enlightening experience as I explore various sectors such as investment banking, wealth management, and more. 💡Here is what I have learned and implemented since then : ✨One important lesson I've learned is to focus on opportunities that align with my current class standing. This targeted approach is more effective than applying to opportunities regardless of class standing. ✨I always check out workshop events hosted by companies on Handshake to sharpen my technical skills for interviews and the job. ✨Keep an abudance mindset when seeking opportunities, despite your class standing, major, ect. Opportunities are always there with perseverance and a proactive approach. ✨I am connecting with peers instead of only recruiters. There have been so many times when I messaged some of my peer connections about different opportunities that they have and for advice. Most times, people are happy to help. ✨Take advantage of doing certification courses. I used to be very sad that I couldn't get a summer internship, but I have turned that sadness into the motivation to work on certification and externships. 💕Thank you, Citi Bank, for the first-year student opportunity. To upcoming freshmen who want to get their feet wet in their field, check out discovery or freshman programs in your desired industry. Search for "[insert industry] programs for freshmen." For example : Finance programs for freshman. 💕Also, thanks for the cute merch! #Finance #CollegeStudent #Citibank #Banking #FinanceProgram
