The scenes-a-faire doctrine is critical to creators as it helps to ensure that basic building blocks of creativity are free for any creator to reuse. UPCOMING WEBINAR: European Copyright Legislation – Quo vadis? Over 30 years have passed since the efforts to harmonise European copyright law began. However, the use of directives focusing on specific practical or legal issues, and especially the diverging national implementations, has resulted in a legal situation that is still fragmented. The Court of Justice of the European Union has not been able to remedy this situation entirely. Has the time come for the next step? Should European copyright law be unified through a regulation? If that’s not feasible, should the Court's case law at least be codified? Professor Eleonora Rosati, Stockholm University, who has argued that the time is right for unification, will discuss with Professor Ole-Andreas Rognstad, Oslo University. World's First Copyright Law: The Statute of Anne (1709) 📚 The Statute of Anne, enacted in 1709, was the world's first full-fledged copyright law. Named after Queen Anne, this groundbreaking statute not only gave publishers 14 years of legal protection but also recognized authors' rights for the first time, albeit more as an incidental benefit. It laid the foundation for the modern concept of copyright, shifting the focus from mere regulation of the book trade to acknowledging the rights of authors.
