Nordic journalists aim to intervene when reporting on environmental issues. They do not only see themselves as objective news providers or critical watchdogs, but also as educators and advocates. This is found in a new qualitative study examining the self-perceptions of professional environmental journalists in Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. "They renegotiate professional norms and practices in order to interpret and make sense of environmental issues", say the authors. "Countries around the globe are affected by environmental changes. As powerful actors in environmental communication – able to elevate issues to the public agenda and frame them from selected perspectives – professional news media can have a vital position in facilitating future-oriented discussions and solutions regarding the environment, nature, and climate. How journalists perceive their roles is therefore of importance. This study pays particular attention to how they make sense of intervening", they continue. 📍Read the article Open Access👇 #environment #journalism #Nordic #environmental #journalistroles ----- Nordicom Review (2.0 Journal Impact Factor) is an Open Access peer reviewed journal devoted to new Nordic media and communication research. The world is facing an unprecedented environmental emergency, and journalists are paying the ultimate price for reporting on it. According to UNESCO, over 750 attacks on journalists and news outlets covering environmental issues have been reported in the past 15 years, with the frequency of such attacks rising. https://buff.ly/3QpTGC8 #SupportLocalJournalism #LocalNewsMatters #CommunityFirst #WorldPressFreedomDay

I had the honor to give the closing speech at the World Press Freedom Conference (in Santiago, Chile. 🇨🇱), which addressed the pivotal role of the media in tackling climate change and the global environmental crisis. My gratitude to the Chilean Government for hosting this crucial UNESCO event, marking the 30th anniversary of the historic Santiago Declaration, a milestone in advancing freedom of expression and press pluralism in Latin America and the Caribbean. This year's World Press Freedom Day served as a vital platform to emphasize the indispensable role that journalists play in highlighting environmental issues and holding accountable those responsible for ecological harm. Their pursuit of truth comes with significant risks. Over the past 15 years, there were at least 749 attacks against environmental journalists; 44 of these journalists were killed, and only 5 cases of these killings were legally completed. These alarming figures and the unacceptably high impunity rate must end. Moreover, the proliferation of misinformation poses a serious threat to environmental discourse. False narratives undermine public and political support for climate action, hindering progress toward a sustainable future. Addressing these challenges demands a multifaceted approach. We must uphold the principles of responsibility, transparency and accountability, and ensure that content moderation and curation align with international human rights' standards. In light of the complex challenges discussed during last week's Santiago conference, UNESCO will develop a roadmap to combat violence against environmental journalists and address the proliferation of climate disinformation. The roadmap will be launched next year at the COP30 conference in Brazil. Together, let's work towards a world where truth prevails, and our environment is protected for generations to come.

Publication alert! 🔔🔔 I am thrilled to share that my latest article, "Covering Environment and Climate Change in Turkey: Transformative Journalisms Face Competitive Authoritarianism," has been published in Journalism Studies! 50 free copies are available here: https://lnkd.in/dha6cPBW 🚩 I built on the transformative journalisms framework of Dr. Michael Brüggemann and aimed to understand the practices and challenges of climate journalists in Turkey while discussing how emergent transformative journalism approaches play out beyond Western democracies. 🚩 After 2 years of research and interviews, I concluded that most of the climate journalists in Turkey go beyond solely reporting on climate science and undertake the mission of advocacy for the transformation toward ecological sustainability despite constant political pressure, financial restraints, and polarization traps. 🚩 Although inspiring hardly any policy change under the circumstances demotivates the journalists, niche outlets invest in raising community-level awareness of climate change and forging broad alliances with local journalists, actors of environmental movements, and civil society, keeping hopes alive for bottom-up transformation. 🚩 The most urgent needs are dedicated training programs for emergent journalists, generating sustainable income models, and challenging the discourse of pro-government media through local stories with a climate angle.

#WorldPressFreedomDay The #environment is not just a highly dangerous topic to cover – sometimes akin to conflict reporting – but it has become a cesspit of corporate propaganda emitted by polluting industries, some of them giant state-owned entities, as well as their partners in disinformation ensconced in politics, academia, “non-profit” foundations AND the mass media themselves. UNESCO is dedicating #WorldPressFreedomDay this year to the importance of #journalism and #freedomofexpression in the context of the current global environmental crisis. As UNESCO says: “Independent journalists as well as scientists are crucial actors in helping our societies to separate facts from lies and manipulation in order to take informed decisions, including about environmental policies.” “Investigative journalists are also shedding light on environmental crimes, exposing corruption and powerful interests, and sometimes paying the ultimate price for doing their job.” Read opinion article by Farhana Haque Rahman, Senior Vice President of IPS Inter Press Service and Executive Director IPS Noram.

🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 As always, #WorldPressFreedomDay takes place on May 3rd. This year's focus is #environmentaljournalism. And rightly so: journalists have a key role in informing and engaging people around one of the biggest issues of our time, whether to help people adapt in countries which are already experiencing devastating effects or - better still - holding governments and corporations to account for action that is urgently needed. But this is dangerous work. 39% of respondents to our forthcoming survey of 818 journalists in over 100 countries said they were sometimes or frequently threatened for their reporting, with the same percentage self-censoring as a result. If you're in #Chile, come and say hello! We'd love to see you at sessions that we're hosting with partners on May 4th. We'll be exploring #climatejournalism, of course, but also #exiledmedia and the importance of the #MediaFreedomCoalition in upholding press freedom worldwide. 15:30 – 16:30 Environmental and climate journalists under fire: Strategies to promote free and safe news coverage of the global environmental crisis. Hosted by International Press Institute (IPI), Pulitzer Center, Internews Earth Journalism Network | Room A1 15:30 - 17:00 Survival Strategies: How Exile Media Adapt to New Realities. Organized by The Center for International Media Assistance, Internews, the Committee to Protect Journalists and the Thomson Reuters Foundation | Room N2 17:30 – 19:00 Case studies of action from the Media Freedom Coalition: supporting journalists at risk through safe refuge and coordinated advocacy . Hosted by Media Freedom Coalition | Room A2 18:00 – 19:00 Uncovering Environmental Crimes in Tropical Ecosystems: Investigative Journalism and Press Freedom in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Hosted by Internews | Room N2 https://lnkd.in/dEpwbrzs
