Can you rapidly build, launch, and improve an organization using low-code? Absolutely. This is a real story: Gateway Terminals provides container terminals, truck and rail gate, and stevedoring services at the nation’s third busiest container port complex, Georgia Ports Authority (GPA). Their challenge? Gateway Terminals used a legacy ERP system with several disparate applications to collect and manage operational data. Imagine having to manually check data, manage teams, track progress, and orchestrate logistics across one of America’s busiest ports. It was a labor-intensive process. For example, the team needed to manually file AOM reports (damage tracking, container moves, breaks, etc.) via email every 2 hours, totaling up to 10 AOMs. Manually compiling and sending the data was time-consuming and error-prone. We designed, built, and implemented an ERP for Gateway Terminals that automated data collection and workflows for container logistics and workforce management within the harbor. From a single dashboard. That gives their team real-time reports on productivity, volume reporting, operational reporting, vessel activity, etc. They can also manage scheduling directly from the dashboard. The new application saves their team hundreds of hours of manual labor, giving them more time to focus on their customers, with a much lower risk of human error. Now? The client sees us as a trusted partner. We work with them, running two-week sprints that focus on finding and improving inefficiencies across the organization.

I would really like to believe that 2024 will be a better year for logistics than the previous one. However, it's just a belief, and for now, I see the opposite. What should be done about it? I communicate a lot with transport companies across Europe, from small to large ones with fleets of over 1000 trucks, and we all agree on the market situation. Now, I want to touch on a philosophical topic for transport companies – what can be optimized in this business? Who among the transport companies will stay ahead, and who will fall hopelessly behind? Let's start with the question of "what to optimize," which, in turn, will lead us to the answer of "who will win." Every logistics professional knows that the main cost items are: - Transport - Fuel - Drivers And here is one small detail that many overlook, making a huge mistake: not many realize the fourth, crucial point for growing companies – processes. Ineffective processes consume time and resources on manual tasks, eroding the profitability of transport companies. While everyone knows what to do with transport and fuel, and if the driver issue can be optimized with services like the one we are currently developing (more details here), there remains the question of tying all these together, refining, and automating processes = cost optimization. Ineffective processes include: - Overstaffing, with three people screwing in one light bulb - Slow decision-making - Insufficient customer service - Low turnover of funds - Idle transport Yes, automation is a long and not cheap path if you think in short distances of 6-12 months. However, over distances of at least 3+ years, those who invest now, whether in improving existing software or creating their ERP, TMS, WMS, HRMS, CRM systems, etc., will be at the top of the game. Of course, automation is not a silver bullet, but speaking with acquaintances in transport companies, we agree that digitizing the logistics industry can change the rules of the game.
