Higher Education: Big Decisions, Big Impact, Big Risk. Virtually every #university right now is announcing voluntary redundancies, possible course closures, or some form of organisational restructuring to help reduce costs in the face of stagnanting income. These are big decisions being made that impact almost everyone from academic and support staff, to existing and future students. They carry a huge amount of risk, so they need to be made with significant thought, planning, and perhaps most importantly #insight. This morning I was re-watching The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and something Sam said when he took on the mantle of Captain America, about those in positions of power being able to do so much with a simple decision jumped out at me. As he put it: "The question is, who's in the room with you when you're making these decisions? Is it the people your decision is going to impact? Or is it more people just like you?" Higher Education is a partnership game. We're all in this together. So let's genuinely be in it together; from insight to decision to action.

REMEMBERING #LBJ AND THE #GREATSOCIETY SPEECH Hard to believe that it was 60 years ago today when Lyndon Baines Johnson delivered his Great Society speech to graduates at the University of Michigan. Domestic initiatives included legislation and programs aimed at ending poverty, curbing crime, tackling inequality and conserving the environment. Sound familiar? When I reflect back to the days when Congress actually worked across the aisle to address the many issues facing the country, it is LBJ and his time in the Senate that stand out for me. In Ann Arbor, 60 years ago he asked young people to join a "battle" to fulfill the aims of the nation's founders. He said: “I have come here today to your campus to say that you can make their vision our reality. …The Great Society is not a safe harbor, a resting place, a final objective, a finished work,” Johnson said. “It is a challenge constantly renewed, beckoning us toward a destiny where the meaning of our lives matches the marvelous products of our labor.” A totally bizarre choice of something to write for me. But after lots of talk of bipartisanship in passing the 2024 FAA Reauthorization bill hopefully those that follow will not be talking about the same issues undermining the efficiencies of commercial aviation on May 22, 2084. But the way things work here in DC, I bet there are more than a few. And until politics stop deciding what is best for them at the ballot box rather than what is needed to build the best air transportation system possible, I am guessing that many of today's issues will still be on the debate agenda. #swelbar

Earlier this fall, the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the IRS released more guidance and pro¬posed rules on key provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that requires employers to meet certain labor mandates involving apprenticeship mandates, prevailing wage requirements and possible forced unionization on green energy construction projects. IMA Partner Amundsen Davis, LLC breaks things down on page 22 in the latest edition of The Illinois Manufacturer.

I truly believe reading and education is a civil if not human right.
On this day in 1991, President George H.W. Bush signed the National Literacy Act with the First Lady of Literacy by his side. Since its passage, millions of adults in the United States have had a second chance to return to education and earn their high school diplomas.
