As someone passionate about food security, I was alarmed when a national leader in food rescue said to me, “If we pay farmers, they will expect to be paid.” 🧐🤨😱 This statement highlights a critical issue in food sustainability ——->>>> the donation-based model of the charitable food system. That's why I am teaming up with a Pennsylvania farmer to educate her colleagues on food equity for the farmer. Our workshop session title: “Food Dignity: Get Paid to Fight Hunger." It's crucial that we recognize the value of farmers' hard work and compensate them appropriately. The food industry is a complex, global network of diverse businesses that supplies most of the food consumed by the world's population. The food industry today has become highly diversified, with manufacturing ranging from small, traditional, family-run activities that are highly labour-intensive, to large, capital-intensive and highly mechanized industrial processes. Many food industries depend almost entirely on local agriculture, animal farms, produce, and/or fishing. The food industry has a large influence on consumerism. Organizations, such as The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), have been criticized for accepting monetary donations from companies within the food industry, such as Coca-Cola.These donations have been criticized for creating a conflict of interest and favoring an interest such as financial gains. #snsinstitutions #designthinking #designthinkers

Did you know that we support several charities through our work? Probably not, it’s not really something we shout about . it’s just something we do intrinsically, because it’s the right thing. It might be some hangover from being told years ago that charity/charitable donations should be done in private, not for praise. That being said we read something really important about “climate shadow” earlier today. What that basically means, really simplistically, is that it’s not enough to just do good, you need to shout about why and it should inform your business practice. Anyway, with that in mind, it’s time to share who we support. There are about 10 charities in total, almost exclusively wildlife, food poverty and human rights. And this is a new one to add to the list @bristolzooproject - we went yesterday and it was bloody brilliant! We joined as members on the spot, and throughout this next project, we are working on in Bristol, we are going to support them. The biggest impact environmentally, when eating meat, is habitat loss due to deforestation. I told my little boy that when I was his age, I took part in a school debate about zoos/safari parks - and I was dead against them. Over 30 years later, they are necessary. It’s terrifying, the mass extinction, we face. If you haven’t already visited, please make it a priority. it’s a beautifully curated space. Genuinely gave me all the feels. Growing Hope in Rural Communities Living in a rural area with limited access to nutritious food can be challenging, but it also presents unique opportunities to make a difference. For the past three years, my daughter and I have dedicated a portion of my garden to growing red beets for donation to my community. Despite facing a moderate drought, the harvest was abundant and bountiful with 457.5 pounds of red beets being distributed this week! Urban areas are often showcased in food insecurity, however, did you know that over 34 million people in the United States, including 9 million children, are food insecure? (Source: Feeding America) Rural communities are often hit the hardest, with limited access to grocery stores and fresh produce. That's why every contribution counts and urge avid gardeners to do the same. Why red beets? These vibrant vegetables are a nutritional powerhouse rich in essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and offer longer shelf life. By donating these red beets, we aim to provide my neighbors with not just food, but nutritious options that can improve their health and wellbeing. It's been inspiring to see the resilience of these plants and the gratitude from those who received them. In times of scarcity, it's the small acts of kindness that sow the seeds of hope and build stronger, healthier communities.
