What does it take to test an orbital thruster under realistic conditions? While atmospheric testing provides valuable data on basic performance and thermal characteristics, the vacuum of space has a significant impact on thrust, ignition and thermal behavior. As a result, vacuum testing becomes a critical milestone to ensure the reliable operation of the thruster in space. The challenge of testing in a vacuum chamber is to remove the hot exhaust gases and maintain the low-pressure environment. By using a custom-made diffuser, the M11.2 vacuum chamber setup at the DLR-Institut für Raumfahrtantriebe enabled us to perform extended testing under realistic conditions. The diffuser also allowed us to directly measure the specific impulse - and to get some nice pictures of our thruster operating under thermal steady-state conditions without flow separation phenomena. In just four days, we demonstrated over 3,500 ignitions and 12 kg of propellant throughput with a single thruster - bringing HyNOx technology one step closer to orbit. 🚀 #HyNOx #space #propulsion #greenpropulsion #innovation #engineering

An Inside Look at NASA’s Large Composite Rocket Fuel Tank 👀 A team of engineers from both NASA and Boeing came up with a unique propellant tank design and manufacturing process to build one of the largest composite rocket fuel tanks few years ago. 🚀 The primary objective of the project was to refine the processes and technology in making these composite cryogenic propellant tanks suitable for future heavy lift vehicles and other in-space application. 🤩 NASA experts learned from prior tank designs and testing and helped devise ways to combat imperfections such as microscopic leaks, found in previous composite tanks. The team leveraged Boeing’s experience producing composites for aircraft to use a unique fiber-placement technique and new materials that did not require expensive curing processes in autoclaves, procedures traditionally associated with composite production.😎 Curious to learn more about composites' role in aerospace?
