When I read this article by Eric Berger, a couple of things jump out at me. First, sometimes the best ideas sound crazy and appear to have no purpose, and to survive, they need a visionary / champion. Second, mission can and should trump project management. Project managers focus on delivering, but mission defines what should be delivered. Lastly, fundamental research and pushing the boundaries doesn't always have immediate practical use, but it's valuable knowledge that forms the foundation of where we're going. https://lnkd.in/g5jwgJ6G

Hey Project Managers! 📢 Learn why managing risks early in the project life cycle is key In his book "Project Management: The Managerial Process ISE" (2020), Larson highlights a vital point: risks are highest at the beginning of a project. While risks decrease as the project progresses, the cost of fixing problems increases. Learn from NASA’s Mistake 🌌 Remember the 1999 NASA Mars Climate Orbiter? A missed design flaw caused the probe to burn up, wasting $125 million. This disaster taught NASA to catch and fix issues early. The Lesson? Act Early! Handling risks early can prevent big problems and keep projects on track and within budget. It’s not just about avoiding disaster; it’s about controlling the project and increasing success. External Threats 🏦 Don't forget about external risks like inflation and market changes. Even though we can't control these, we need to include them in our risk management plans. Let's Aim High! Proactive risk management leads to successful projects and reaching new heights. Here's to managing risks smartly and achieving our goals! 🚀 #ProjectManagement #RiskManagement #Leadership #LearningFromHistory Discover more about effective risk management on our website [https://buff.ly/3yQvRxo].

Earned Value in Project Management: A Global Perspective Earned Value Management (EVM) is an essential project management technique that integrates scope, schedule, and cost to objectively measure project performance and forecast future outcomes. Its adoption worldwide highlights its effectiveness and versatility. In the U.S., EVM is a mandated practice for government contracts, ensuring accountability and efficiency in projects managed by entities like the Department of Defense and NASA. Across Europe, EVM principles are embedded in the EU's Horizon 2020 initiatives, promoting transparency and systematic control in research and innovation projects. Asia is witnessing a significant uptake in EVM, particularly in China and India. The method's robustness is crucial for managing large-scale infrastructure and IT projects in these rapidly developing regions. Australia’s growing use of EVM in both public and private sectors underscores its adaptability and universal value in aligning projects with strategic goals. Globally, the adoption of EVM demonstrates its indispensable role in delivering projects on time and within budget, regardless of industry or regional context. As a best practice, EVM continues to shape project management, ensuring efficiency and stakeholder confidence worldwide. #ProjectManagement #EarnedValueManagement #GlobalBestPractices #EVM #ProjectSuccess #InternationalManagement #PMI

Project management involves learning from past failures, which requires complex coordination and decision-making. Analyzing the Titanic and Challenger disasters offers vital lessons: The Titanic: What Happened? The Titanic, a passenger liner deemed "unsinkable," tragically sank on its maiden voyage in 1912 after hitting an iceberg. Over 1,500 lives were lost. Key Lessons: - Adequate Risk Assessment - Quality Control - Stakeholder Communication The Challenger Space Shuttle Disaster: What Happened? In 1986, the Challenger space shuttle broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, leading to the deaths of all seven crew members. The disaster was attributed to the failure of an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster. Key Lessons: - Heeding Expert Warnings - Safety Over Schedule - Crisis Management and Contingency Planning General Takeaways for Project Managers: 1. Risk Management: Continuously evaluate risks. 2. Decision Integrity: Ensure integrity in decision-making. 3. Safety and Compliance: Never compromise safety. 4. Communication and Documentation: Maintain transparent communication and thorough documentation. By internalizing these lessons, project managers can avoid repeating historical mistakes and lead their projects to success with greater awareness of potential pitfalls. 💡 What other historical events do you think offer valuable insights for project management? 🤔 #ProjectManagement #LessonsLearned
