Historical Markers are a nuanced part of the #historyenterprise. Many states started erecting metal markers in the 1930s, sometimes utilizing #NewDeal funding. The catalog of what’s on them has continued to grow in diversity and inclusion. A problem with markers is duration in that ways of expressing #history has changed with #language and the kinds of questions asked of the Past. Revising legacy markers can almost be a full time job! In the meantime, the inventory of markers continues to grow.
More than 600 state historical markers have been erected throughout Wisconsin since the program was first authorized by a state statute in 1943. Today, the Wisconsin Historical Society seeks to expand the stories told across the state by issuing a special call for applications for new historical markers on topics that are currently underrepresented within the program. Up to 12 new markers will be funded thanks to a generous grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation! Visit this page for more information on how to apply and full eligibility requirements: https://lnkd.in/e47zNMTk. Applications are due by April 30, 2024. 📸: Mooningwaanikaaning Marker Dedication on Madeline Island (608th state historical marker) | September 30, 2023 | Rob Goslin Sr., Nicole Boyd, Mike Wiggins Jr., Christian Overland

Join us this Wednesday, July 17! Center for Ethical Land Transition will share more about approaches to land justice by sharing two land transition stories. Grounding Justice in the Land is a joint webinar with PolicyLink's Spatial Futures team. More details -- 🌀 As we develop reparative spatial justice strategies that reckon with, repair, and transform the racist foundations of land and housing policies in the United States, we are reminded that it is essential that we understand the centrality of land for Indigenous, Black, and People of Color communities. Across the country, and indeed across the world, communities that have faced legacies of dispossession and displacement are growing movements to reshape our relationships to land and create more just spatial futures. In this webinar, we invite you to learn more about the strategies that communities across the country are using to transition land from the speculative market and into community-controlled models of land stewardship and caretaking. 📅 Wed, July 17 🕰 12 - 2pm PST ➡ Register here: https://lnkd.in/g-FnjRbc

The New York Times has an interesting article about the Midwest and says that it “resists being defined.” I disagree. You can define the Midwest pretty easily and what makes this region special: THE PEOPLE Living outside of Missouri for 7 years in the South and East Coast taught me a lot about how the Midwest is viewed: flyover country, farms, Rust Belt cities, etc. What most are NOT familiar with is our character aka “Midwest Nice.” We are neither rude nor overtly kind but courteous. Instead of being treated like a number, we actually see people and want to understand them. We do not rush but take our take our time which means change comes SLOWLY (not always good!). With no mountains or oceans, most of what makes our communities special is made by people: food, fairs, music, architecture and sports. The majority of the Midwest has little to no accent (except Minnesota, Wisconsin and Chicago!). There is a reason media folks are taught to speak/write with a Midwestern dialect (its diction is plain and shows no regional bias) which helps explain why a lot of our nation’s greatest writers/broadcasters are from the Midwest: Hemingway, Twain, Cronkite, & Brokaw. Over the centuries, our region has been steamrolled by dust bowls, great fires, tornados, floods and economic downturns in our cities/small towns. We have always found a way to rebuild and come together. Never bet against our grit. The Midwest will find a way to endure. “In me, you have Missouri morals…” as Mark Twain once said. That’s the best definition of what it means to be Midwestern. #midwest Emily Schmall Sara Ruberg

Dunn Fellow for Public Safety, Infrastructure, Environment, and Energy - Office of IL Governor JB Pritzker
My thesis, Heads in the Sand, won the 2024 Richard P. Taub Thesis Prize from UChicago's Public Policy Studies department for its "original and extensive research" (their words, not mine). It focused on describing the impact of climate change on Lake Michigan water levels to understand future implications for beach access across the state of Illinois. Through a mix of geospatial and legal analysis, I find that up to 60% of beach spaces may be fully inundated under the most extreme climate scenarios by 2040. The full thesis is linked below, but out of respect for your time I advise you not to try to read the full thing. Also, I graduated. After graduation, I will be a Dunn Fellow for the Governor's Office of Illinois under Deputy Governor Bria Scudder, who oversees executive agencies related to public safety, infrastructure, energy, and the environment. On to the next chapter!
