Have you seen the news?! 👀📺 Our very own Kylie Rowe, TMT’s Executive Director, is being featured this week on RTC’s The Road Ahead. In the segment airing on KOLO 8 News Now this Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Kylie highlights a few of the #QualityofLife data indicators TMT tracks via NevadaTomorrow.org (our FREE community data portal! 📊), and shares how that publicly available data is then used to measure our collective progress, inform community stakeholders, and improve community well-being overall. A great example of this collaborative effort is the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe Co.'s involvement in our Land Use & Infrastructure category, which includes various local transportation and safety data points, illustrating how these hyper-local indicators are instrumental to regional planning efforts and ultimately drive more economic development throughout the Truckee Meadows. If you happen to catch the segment at home, make sure to tag us @TMTdatastories! ☀️ https://lnkd.in/gAavZ6QE

The New York Times has an interesting article about the Midwest and says that it “resists being defined.” I disagree. You can define the Midwest pretty easily and what makes this region special: THE PEOPLE Living outside of Missouri for 7 years in the South and East Coast taught me a lot about how the Midwest is viewed: flyover country, farms, Rust Belt cities, etc. What most are NOT familiar with is our character aka “Midwest Nice.” We are neither rude nor overtly kind but courteous. Instead of being treated like a number, we actually see people and want to understand them. We do not rush but take our take our time which means change comes SLOWLY (not always good!). With no mountains or oceans, most of what makes our communities special is made by people: food, fairs, music, architecture and sports. The majority of the Midwest has little to no accent (except Minnesota, Wisconsin and Chicago!). There is a reason media folks are taught to speak/write with a Midwestern dialect (its diction is plain and shows no regional bias) which helps explain why a lot of our nation’s greatest writers/broadcasters are from the Midwest: Hemingway, Twain, Cronkite, & Brokaw. Over the centuries, our region has been steamrolled by dust bowls, great fires, tornados, floods and economic downturns in our cities/small towns. We have always found a way to rebuild and come together. Never bet against our grit. The Midwest will find a way to endure. “In me, you have Missouri morals…” as Mark Twain once said. That’s the best definition of what it means to be Midwestern. #midwest Emily Schmall Sara Ruberg
