For Women’s History Month, we’re recognizing the successes and achievements of BARDA employees. Meet Connie Song, Lead Contract Specialist, Division of Contract Management and Acquisitions. One of Connie’s greatest career achievements to date is having the opportunity to support the BARDA mission and working with such a talented and dedicated group. She added, “specifically providing contracting support to the Division of Research, Innovation and Ventures (DRIVe) in launching new and novel program initiatives.” Connie’s advice to young women who are just starting their professional careers is: “stay true to yourself and pursue your passions. Those incremental steps (some of which will feel like steps backwards) toward achieving every goal you set out to tackle is part of the experience that makes those more challenging moments worthwhile — there’s no failure in learning.” Women strengthen public health and national security with their dedication to meaningful work. Refueling clarity and discernment is easy with this group!

I just returned home this weekend from a big regional area meet in Pensacola and saw this. Wanted to share it as this is the beauty of cross country and how it would apply if we used that same spirit in our work and personal lives. These are not my words but as a 7+ year cross country mom, they very well could be. —- What if we lived life like we were all in a cross country meet? What if we watched other people and recognized that we're all just trying to get across the finish line? What if we understood that some people are running as hard as they can but battling illnesses, invisible injuries, and internal struggles? Every step is hard, but they're trying not to quit. What if we cheered for everyone even if they weren't on our team? What if we realized just finishing something, no matter how long it took us or how messy it seemed, was enough? In fact, it was a win. What if we used every race as an opportunity to learn more about ourselves and how we could use each other for support, inspiration, and help to reach our goals? What if we cheered loud for the winner, but even louder for the one who comes in after because they accomplished something great, too? In a world that tells us it's about me, me, me, what if we started living to support everyone brave enough to be in the race? Transformative technologies such as AI make difficult tasks more accessible and convenient. Since 2018, the use of AI in research has increased drastically, with annual publication rates of 3–5 times higher than pre-2017. Currently, >100,000 manuscripts using AI are published annually within science and engineering, and >20,000 of these belong to the agricultural and environmental fields. Given the magnitude of use, clear communication on how AI is used and how it helps advance scientific knowledge is essential. Clear communication is perhaps more necessary with AI than previous technologies due to its broad and flexible spectrum of uses, the “black-box” nature of deep-learning algorithms, and ongoing debates regarding AI's predictive power versus knowledge of first-principles mechanistic and process-based theories and models. In this commentary, we provide guidelines and discussion points to the scientific community to ensure transparent and effective communication of AI research in agricultural and environmental research publications.
