£10 million investment to spark creative potential “The North East is a region on the rise and taking its rightful place in the world - standing tall and proud on the national and world stage, thanks to our world-class arts, culture, and creativity.” The North East is set to benefit from a £10 million investment to enhance its cultural and creative industries, with funding from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport allocated to establish a new centre at Bolbec Hall for writing and publishing in Newcastle, as well as a new glassmaking centre in Sunderland, helping preserve the city’s rich 1,350-year glassmaking heritage. What a day. The creative industries are at the heart of our plans for growth in the North East. At today’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport Creative industries Growth Summit, alongside Secretary of State for Culture Lisa Nandy we announced: 📖£5m for New Writing North for a National Writing Centre in the heart of Newcastle. ✨£5m for Sunderland Culture Glassworks in Sunderland, regenerating and preserving the ancient skill of glassmaking for generations to come. 🎤Our region prioritised for Creative Industry investment. All this matches our regional investment but we are unapologetically ambitious and we can do more. 🧑🏭The Legacy of History: A Visit to the Hamburg Bunker During a recent visit to Hamburg, I had the opportunity to touch one of the most impressive and controversial legacies of the Second World War - the Flakturm IV bunker. This massive concrete structure, once intended to protect the city from air raids, today symbolizes not only the past, but also society's ability to transform pain into something meaningful. 🏛️ The story of the bunker Built in 1942, the bunker served as an anti-aircraft tower and shelter for tens of thousands of citizens. Its thick walls and strategic position have made it a key part of Hamburg's defense. But today it is much more than a historical relic – it is an example of sustainable urban development and cultural transformation. Today, the bunker is home to creative businesses, music studios and exhibition spaces. Visitors can see how a structure built for war has been transformed into a place of creativity and innovation. This visit made me think about the power of transformation – not only in an architectural aspect, but also in a human aspect. Regardless of our challenges, we can always find a way to rethink the difficulties and create something new and useful. It's not often that you get to preserve a piece of Lancashire heritage. When Higher Mill Museum Trust came looking for a brand refresh and website, it was time for me, Christopher mason and @nickelsby to bring our collective Lancashire passion and apply it to this fascinating historical landmark. Built in 1789 by the Turner Family, Higher Mill functioned to finish Woollen cloth woven by local cottage weavers. As the Industrial Revolution took place, Whitaker's Mill was built next door and the weavers were replaced. Consequently, this landmark offers a vital insight into Lancastrian history. Our objectives: - To give Higher Mill a digital presence that can help it to raise much needed funds and exist long into the future. - To take the existing logo and develop a more succinct brand identity and a voice that reflected the passion and knowledge of the mill's trustees. - To drive visitors to Higher Mill by clearly articulating its offering, with a pleasurable user journey that gives potential visitors all the information they need. Higher Mill offers a fascinating experience, with a history that deserves to be remembered for generations to come. Located in Helmshore Village, close to Rossendale Valley, it's also an absolutely stunning sight with plenty of walks nearby.
