I'm in New York this week to present my latest report to the United Nations General Assembly on the #BurnoutEconomy: the economic choices that are creating an unseen #MentalHealth crisis for people in #poverty (Thursday 24 October). More information including the link to the report can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ehJPzfbw Among its recommendations, the report considers how a universal basic income could make a major contribution to improving the mental health of people in poverty, and I encourage States to move beyond narrowly targeted social protection schemes and conditional cash transfers to explore the possibility of establishing such unconditional forms of support. For more on the potential role of UBI in alleviating the mental health crisis read my opinion piece with Philippe Van Parijs in Social Europe: Can Universal Basic Income really improve mental health? https://lnkd.in/epjkCk6y

Great to see the spotlight on the link between #Poverty and #MentalHealth, and how economic structures shape mental health outcomes particularly for those living in poverty. The report is a very interesting read and I look forward to the live presentation!

Thanks Olivier De Schutter for this report showing that our growth-obsessed economy is creating a largely ignored and unseen mental health crisis for people in poverty. Rising inequality, growing economic insecurity and the contractualisation of social security all call for urgent action to shift the focus from GDP growth to well-being.

In this video, Ákos shares his personal experience learning about hygiene poverty and how rarely it’s discussed in society. Hygiene goes beyond just physical cleanliness - it affects mental health, self-esteem, and the ability to fully participate in everyday life. Ákos reflects on how little awareness exists around hygiene poverty, despite its wide-reaching impact. Hear Ákos’ perspective and why we need to break the silence around hygiene poverty. A Dual Crisis: The hidden link between poverty and children’s mental health - a new joint report by the Centre for Mental Health, the Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) and Save the Children UK explores the impact of poverty and benefit conditionality on families’ mental health. Based on research with parents and children, and a review of the evidence, the report finds that children are being failed by the state’s inability to combat the dual crises of poverty and mental health. Living in poverty has a devastating impact on children’s mental health. Money and mental health are inextricably linked; not having enough money leads to parental stress and guilt, which has a knock-on impact on children over the course of their lives. Poverty and crime are inextricably linked. If we address poverty we will ameliorate most social issues from crime, to substance abuse and homelessness. This brilliant piece by Tara Schultz highlights the experience of the child in intergenerational poverty. https://lnkd.in/geMMpagi

Poverty casts a shadow over a child’s mental health, and it’s a shadow that can last a lifetime. We're urging the Government to: 👉 Scrap the two-child limit & benefit cap 👉 Expand free school meals provision 👉 Introduce a uniform price cap For more on this, check out our new report with Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) and Save the Children UK: https://lnkd.in/ddRf5Qrx #ChildPoverty #MentalHealth #EndChildPoverty #TwoChildLimit
