Following this morning’s hydrogen session, Alistair Macfarlane and Viana Iancu briefed the US delegation on the UK’s potential for offshore CO2 storage and the NSTA’s role as the technical regulator facilitating the development of a new industry. Alex Milward and his Department for Energy Security and Net Zero team also highlighted the Government’s business models and wider policy offering. #energytransition

The North Sea Transition Authority and The Crown Estate have today published a new Statement of Intent (https://lnkd.in/eU33vu-Q) to confirm joint aspirations in ensuring a more sustainable and closely co-ordinated management of the seabed.  The aim is to build on close collaboration to date and now proactively share data between the two organisations, where possible. This will enable marine development and support a co-ordinated approach to the leasing and licensing of carbon storage, helping to make the UK a world-leading destination for CCUS project investment and the supply chain.  This proactive and collaborative approach will support UK CCUS developments and help meet carbon storage targets, while considering other energy sectors, marine industries, sea users and the natural environment.  The shared data will include spatial information such as GIS maps and co-ordinates of areas under consideration for leasing or licensing.  In addition to setting out common priorities and challenges, the Statement of Intent outlines several joint actions, including:  Implementing a data sharing agreement  Working together and with other relevant bodies to drive coordinated action across sectors, agencies, and the UK  Collaborating on carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) development  Identifying and addressing challenges to coordinated seabed use  Strengthening the evidence base for decision-making  While not legally binding, this agreement represents a shared commitment to fostering sustainable marine development and supporting the UK's energy transition and builds on a previous agreement.  #energytransition #dataanddigital

Speaking at #FloatingWind24 on the 'Harnessing innovation in floating offshore wind technologies' panel, our Chief Technical Officer Carlo Procaccini spoke on the barriers preventing key innovations being developed and implemented, and how to overcome these. He spoke on Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) being an example of regulation and policy mandating decarbonisation and innovation in floating offshore wind, and how INTOG will open the road for larger ScotWind opportunities. "INTOG can accelerate investment in developments, grid connections and deployment of smart technology solutions for floating wind power. It's vital we build up and support the supply chain to support the offshore wind industry." Carlo went on to speak on how industry can best collaborate to advance technologies and accelerate deployment, stating offshore cross-industry collaboration will be "absolutely critical." "We at the NSTA have developed a hands on stewardship approach of our licence operators. We proactively seek the sharing of best practice across industry to collectively enhance performance." More than 20 million barrels of additional production could be brought online cheaply and cleanly by carrying out intervention work on 200 wells, the NSTA’s Director of New Ventures, Andrew Brooks C.Eng, F.I.Chem.E, said at Offshore Energies UK's Wells Conference in Aberdeen today. This was the main conclusion from a study of nearly 800 shut-in wells to understand what percentage could be brought back into production. We will hold a supply chain and operator workshop later in the year to discuss cost-effective ways to get this work up and running. The learnings and efficiencies identified from this initial tranche of wells could be used to restore many more, Andy said. He also urged industry to preserve its credibility by decommissioning wells in a timely and cost-effective way. Andy said this work can provide a bridge, linking oil and gas work with upcoming carbon storage projects which are going to generate huge opportunities for suppliers. NSTA Chief Executive Stuart Payne CBE has this morning welcomed the government's confirmation of funding for #CCS. Stuart said: “The multibillion-pound investment announced today by government is a huge boost for the carbon storage industry, which will play a crucial role in the UK’s drive to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The NSTA is doing its part to support the growth of this exciting sector.
