Uplifting Music, Uplifting Moments: Every year Doug's family does a secret Santa exchange and this year Doug drew his daughter-in-law’s name. “I had purchased this wonderful speaker but when she added Taylor Swift’s 1989 album to her Christmas wish list, I knew immediately that I had to get that for her.” Doug’s choice was fantastic and she loved the gift. He continued to spread the joy of music with his next act of kindness. Doug, a former patient on U200 at our Salem hospital, reached out to ask if he could give us the speaker. We were happy to be able to accept and see Doug again. “When I was at Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital Network my therapists would often play music during my sessions in the gyms and I really liked it,” shared Doug. “My hope is that this speaker helps spread the same joy I experienced during my rehabilitation. The music and the team are really uplifting.” Thank you, Doug!!! This gift will truly continue to make a difference. Thanks for letting us be part of your song :) Read more about Doug's journey in his touching tribute: The Ultimate Lesson in Kindness at https://lnkd.in/eND3EtS9 #northeastrehabilitationhospitalnetwork #NortheastRehabilitationHospitalNetwork #NRHN #choosenortheastrehab

Kenny Rogers - The Gambler "The Gambler" by Kenny Rogers & Released in 1978, this iconic song 🎼became one of Rogers' signature hits, defining his career and leaving a lasting impact on country music and beyond. "The Gambler" tells the story of a late-night conversation between the narrator and an experienced gambler on a train. Through its vivid and memorable lyrics, the song delivers life lessons framed as advice on playing cards, with lines like, "You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run." These words of wisdom transcend the card game, offering insights into making smart decisions, recognizing opportunities, and knowing when to let go. Written by Don Schlitz, "The Gambler" became a massive hit for Kenny Rogers, reaching number one on the Billboard Country Singles chart and crossing over to the pop charts. Its success earned Rogers a Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 1980. The song's narrative style and Rogers' distinctive, gravelly voice captivated audiences, making "The Gambler" a timeless anthem that remains relevant and beloved today. The track's influence extended beyond music, inspiring a series of TV movies starring Kenny Rogers as the titular gambler. These films further cemented the song's cultural significance and Rogers' status as a country music legend. Whether you're a longtime fan of Kenny Rogers or discovering his work for the first time, "The Gambler" serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of wisdom, strategy, and knowing when to take risks in life. #kennyrogers #country #countrymusic #explorepage

Here’s the second in a series of thoughts that stem from the Stephan Hogan podcast with Vince Gill (I originally said there would be 4, but I think there may end up being more). This one is very interesting to me. Stephan and Vince are talking about a period before Vince hit the big time as a solo artist. Vince was working on his next solo album and described the times as “lean” financially. As Vince tells it, Mark Knopfler had offered him a spot on the world tour for Dire Straits. Vince declined the offer, saying that as bad as he needed it financially, "...If I don't believe in me, no one else will." Note: that record turned out to be Vince’s solo break out “When I Call Your Name” which went on to be certified double platinum, with the title track winning a Grammy for Best Male Vocal Country Performance and Single of the Year from Country Music Association. In the business world I think this is sometimes captured in the idea of “imposter syndrome”. Am I good enough? Do I deserve to be here? Personally, I want to be around people who believe in the importance of what they are doing and believe in their ability to get it done. Does it have to be perfect? No. Do we have to recover when there’s been a misstep? Yes. It can be so tempting to take the easier path, particularly when the road gets much more difficult, even if it means giving up on something that we might hold dear or valuable. But, sticking it out matters. This week my challenge to myself and each of you: let’s believe in ourselves. Let’s give other people a reason to believe in us. Let refresh our “why” and keep it at the center of our journey. Make it a great week! #mondaythought #continuousimprovement

Happy Monday! The last week or so I’ve had this thing running through my mind. This will be the first in a series of 4 weekly thoughts that come from a recent podcast of an interview with Vince Gill (Stephan Hogan's – Creative Evolution). For anyone who’s not in the know, Vince is a country musician (guitar player, singer, songwriter) and has won 22 Grammy Awards, eight Academy of Country Music awards, and 18 Country Music Association awards. Not exactly a lightweight. In this interview Vince talks about playing with the Eagles for the last 8 years and shares the following story (background: Vince is warming up at sound check and is singing one of his own songs): Don Henley: what is that song? It’s gorgeous. Vince Gill: It’s a song I had out 15 years ago. Don: we need to work that up and do it. Vince: With all due respect, I’d rather not. Don: Why? Vince: I don’t want to give these people one more reason to not like me. I don’t want anybody sitting out there saying I didn’t come here to hear Vince’s songs, I came here to hear the Eagles. Don: I respect that. That is powerful. What a beautiful example of commitment to purpose over ego. Vince could easily have jumped at the chance to play his own music in front of thousands of people every night. Probably would have sold a few more records, too. Instead, he said, “All due respect, I’d rather not.” Each of us is playing some sort of role on a team almost all the time. It made me pause and ask myself how often I’m letting ego get in the way of the purpose. This week my challenge to myself and each of you: let’s look at our role on various teams and ask ourselves if we are appropriately setting our egos aside to support the purpose. If we’re not, let’s take the steps to make it happen. Make it a great week! #mondaythought #continuousimprovement

[This unRivalrous Perspective from Lyle Enright was featured in a recent issue of our biweekly newsletter, The Frame. Click here to subscribe: https://buff.ly/3vu0N4G] Beyoncé’s new album Cowboy Carter is making waves. After an “unwelcoming” reception from many country music fans, Beyoncé answered with a work of art. Historian Jamar Tisby celebrates not only Beyonce’s talent and courage, but also her non-rivalrous model: "Instead of letting the racists win and…claim ownership over an entire genre of music, Beyoncé 'did a deeper dive into the history of Country music.' In creating this album, and she took her time doing it, Beyoncé models the approach that more of us should take when dealing with racism in the world." What, exactly, is that approach? Beyoncé did not respond to prejudice by flaunting her own celebrity or her confidence as an artist. She didn’t fight one myth with a myth of her own. Instead, she carefully studied the history of country music. She brought a richer history to the surface, told a fuller story about American art to which everyone belongs, with symbols that cannot be contained by power or identity. The very existence of Cowboy Carter is humbling to me. It invites me to question my own impulses, my temptation to believe that America has no hope of ever being the beacon for freedom and justice it claims to be. Just because there are people who want to claim that vision for themselves, and exclude others from it, it doesn’t mean that vision should be abandoned. Cowboy Carter says as much in its proud display of American symbols and its celebration of American music. Again, we have much to learn from Beyoncé about how to engage power and prejudice nonrivalrously. As Tisby puts it, "[s]he did not accept the dominant narrative that was crafted by and for white people (and a certain type of white person at that). She interrogated the assumptions and did her own investigation of the source materials." Nonrivalrous resistance starts by taking its time, asking questions, and remembering that not everyone fits our assumptions–or even theirs! It looks for ways to turn rejection into celebration and art.

What do Michael Jordan 🏀 and an 80s goth rock band 🎸 have in common? The ability to build a winning team, and being able to adapt. A winning team is greater than the sum of its parts. It didn’t hurt that MJ had the greatest rebounder of all time, but teams with equal or greater talent have struggled to win championships. The Cult is a goth rock band 🎸 the rose to prominence in the 80s and are still touring today. For 4 decades, they’ve been bringing fans out to rock. The Police is one of the best selling bands of the 80’s, and was stacked with some of the greatest musicians of our time, but their inability to work together broke the band up prematurely. Know your team, and know how to get the most out of them. 👬👭🧑🤝🧑👫🙌🏿🙌 Adapting is key. If you don’t adapt, you won’t succeed. To beat the Bad Boys Pistons 💀🏀⛹🏾♂️, MJ and the Bulls had to adapt. I love 311, but they definitely struggled to adapt their music to wide appeal over the years. They maintained their core audience with some expansion, but their new albums struggled to resonate with audiences. If you want to build long-term success, build a winning team and be willing to adapt. This takes more than hiring the right people. It takes good data to act on, and a digital infrastructure to facilitate experimentation and innovation.
