Today marks the end of Careers in Construction Month. We hope this month has provided you with information and background on the variety of career opportunities we offer here at F.O. Day! To conclude Careers in Construction Month, we sat down with Spencer, our Recruiter, to get the inside tips for pursuing a career with the company – starting with the interview process. · When answering a question always do your best to answer using the S.T.A.R method. · The acronym STAR stands for –– situation, task, action, result: - Situation: Set the scene by briefly describing the situation, challenge, or event you faced. - Task: Explain what your responsibilities were in that situation. What role did you play? - Action: Describe what steps you took to overcome the challenge or address the situation - Result: Share what you achieved through your actions. · Be ready to describe the types of asphalt jobs (Highway, Commercial, or Residential) you have worked on and the equipment (Paver, Screed, or Skid Steer) you operated along with any attachments you may have used as well. · Research the position and organization (e.g., mission, goals, etc.) prior to the interview. Familiarize yourself with the duties, responsibilities and requirements of the position. Thank you for the tips, Spencer! October is Careers in Construction month. Over the next few weeks, we will highlight several team members to shed light on the different positions and the reasons why they entered the industry. First up, our Pipeline Division Director, Andy Cook. What was your first job in the construction industry? • I would go to work for my dad during the summer. I spent much of my time sweeping and shoveling dirt from the road that had been tracked out of the site. Eventually, I got to run a compactor. What led you to decide to enter the construction industry? • The enjoyment I get from seeing something “get built” and knowing that I was able to contribute to something that will benefit multiple people. What is your favorite thing about your current job? • The number of challenges. With the type of work we do, no two projects are the same, and each will have its own set of challenges that will require you to think through the building process each time. What advice would you give someone wanting to enter the construction industry? • Before you settle, try a couple of different types of construction, i.e., commercial, industrial, residential etc. and positions if you have the opportunity. Each type will have its own skill set and knowledge that is required. When you start, make sure to spend time in the field to LEARN what it takes for the work to happen. Everything looks good in the plans, but to succeed, you need to understand what it takes to make the plans a reality. What is your least favorite thing about your current job? • Finding qualified employees or the misconception that construction careers are low paying. Kids in middle/high school have pushed towards 4 year colleges so much that it has created a lack of individuals that are getting into the construction industry as tradesmen. #rubycollins #generalcontractors #rubycollinsgeneralcontractors #smyrna #georgia #careersincaonstruction #letsbuildsomethinggreat #utilitiescontractor

Career Paths. Why are they so important? 🪴 Career paths offer insights into the skills and aspirations within the workforce. Clear career development opportunities within your organisation not only attract candidates, but also empower your workforce, increasing retention. When Stephen Hunt joined Gray Construction, he set out to help employees see a clear path forward. Not only did he establish Gray University to provide learning access to all employees, but he also established career frameworks for operational roles at Gray so that the people in those roles understood why learning and development were important to their futures and to make those roles more attractive to future candidates. Learn about Stephen Hunt's career path journey, and hear how others within the construction industry are developing the future workforce of the construction industry 👉 https://bit.ly/49VQ5CI #Construction #Retention #Workforce #Deskless #Candidates #Learning #Blog #Development

In a recent interview with WZZM's 13 ON YOUR SIDE, Steve Huizinga got to share about the Construction Traveling Roadshow put on by the Construction Careers Council and West Michigan Works! The purpose of the roadshow is to help create a diverse and qualified construction workforce. Steve explains that the next ten years present a turning point for the construction industry as a large group of long-time workers are set to retire. Worse, there’s no pipeline right now to fill the roles being vacated. He emphasized that the industry needs people right now to learn from the very experienced workers leaving the workforce. "We're focused on...getting the next generation of tradespeople. Educating them about what the trades are, how it is a great career option,” says Steve. More importantly the Construction Careers Council wants the students to know that a trade career is a “traditional” choice. "We educate them about how it is a great career. It doesn't have to be nontraditional. It's just a different career path...it's a first tier career path, and it's a great option for any and all." If you know potential workers, including teenagers and young adults, wanting to connect with employers, they can reach out to West Michigan Works! or the West Michigan Construction Institute.
