It’s her last day, so we wanted to take a moment to shine a spotlight on one of our interns, Anna Larson! About to go into her sophomore year, Anna is currently working toward a civil engineering degree at the University of Iowa, and we asked her a few questions about her internship experience over the last three months. These were her answers 😊 What have you learned this summer? This summer, I learned about what a career in civil engineering might look like, and how the math and science classes I have at Iowa apply to real projects. I have also learned how to use CAD software, as I had never worked with it before. What has been your favorite experience during your internship? My favorite experience has been working on a large project and seeing it grow from its beginning stages. I've learned the most about engineering here from the ways conflicts in the project are found and then solved, and since more problems occur in larger projects, at the end there's a larger sense of accomplishment. What are your hobbies & interests outside of school and work? At Iowa, I am part of the pep band and the University Lecture Committee, and I will be studying abroad next semester in Valencia, Spain. My hobbies include biking, writing, and cooking. Anna has been fantastic help this summer, and we wish her the best of luck with her time abroad and the rest of her coursework at Iowa! #intern #internspotlight #appreciation #civilengineer #universityofiowa #iowahawkeyes #studentsuccess #teamwork #leechamberlin #civilengineering #landsurveying #engineertoserve

An Architecture and Engineering Student at the Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center. Intern for Koberstein Contracting, Inc.
As I am now a few months into my internship, I can say I have learned a lot. The knowledge that has been provided to me during this internship is unforgettable and much appreciated! Here is a list of a few things I have learned: - How to set up, use, and properly layout a site using GPS equipment. (Pictured Below: 2 gate Values and a Tee) - How to correctly calibrate a site utilizing GPS equipment. - How to mathematically check interferences in new utilities with existing utilities. - A better understanding of plan reading. - How to wet tap a waterline, without shutting it down. - How to do topsoil cut and fill calculations. - A better understanding of how to correctly install utilities per an engineer's standards. #indianaCTE #internships #architecture @AsherAlden Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center #KobersteinContracting #careertecheducation @SICTCEngineering&ArchitectureAlumni J. It is amazing all of the things I have learned over the course of this internship. I have learned the importance of measuring twice and cutting once, I learned how to shoot grade for the structure of buildings and how important that is with how thick the concrete needs to be. I have also been taught the importance of laying sewer lines and the slope for the best drainage. #Everbuilt #CTEInternship

Hey there, fellow Civil Engineering interns! This internship can be tough sometimes. You might be surrounded by experienced engineers, tackling complex projects, and feeling a little overwhelmed. But that's exactly why internships are so valuable – they're a chance to learn and grow! Here's the thing: every engineer, even the most brilliant ones we admire today, started as interns. They asked questions, made some mistakes, and eventually learned from them. So don't get discouraged if things don't click right away. Embrace the challenges – they're opportunities to build your skills and gain real-world experience. Here are few tips to keep you on track: 1️⃣Focus on the learning: This internship is about soaking up knowledge. Don't be afraid to ask questions, no matter how basic they may seem. From your supervisors even to artisans, ask! The more you learn now, the stronger your foundation will be. 2️⃣Maintain a positive attitude: A can-do spirit is contagious! It shows your superiors you're eager to learn and contribute. Also, a positive outlook makes the whole experience more enjoyable. 3️⃣Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone: Internships are a great time to try new things. Volunteer for different tasks, even if they seem unfamiliar. You might discover hidden talents or passions! 4️⃣Remember, every contribution matters: Even the seemingly small tasks you're doing are important parts of the bigger picture. You're playing a role in bringing these civil engineering projects to life! This internship is a stepping stone to your future as a civil engineer. Embrace the challenges, stay positive, and keep learning. You've got this! Have a knowledge-filled week! #civilengineeringstudent #futureofconstruction #studentintern #continuouslearning #buildingthefuture #sustainabledevelopment #societalimpact #civilengineeringpractice

This video is from one of my site visits in Hanover, VA. They were digging test pits here to see what type of soil was there. This was all previously used soil, so the client can decide (if it's strong enough) to use it to fill in somewhere else on the site, or they can sell it! So appreciative to have had a hands-on experience this summer to learn more about the field of civil engineering! #geotechnicalengineering #civilengineering #internship
