Hello! I’m a second year Occupational Therapy student planning my Doctoral Capstone project and wanted to share with you all some information about universal and inclusive design and sports for people with disabilities. Did you know that universal and inclusive design principles can revolutionize sports for people with disabilities? Here are some facts: ⭐ Universal design creates environments and products usable by all people, regardless of age, size, or ability. ⭐ There are 7 principles of universal design: equitable use, flexibility in use, simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and size and space for approach and use. ⭐ Implementing universal design principles can lead to increased innovation and better products for everyone, not just those with disabilities ⭐ Inclusive design considers the full range of human diversity, including ability, language, culture, gender, and age. Special Olympics Iowa is leading the charge in our state: ⭐ They serve over 14,500 athletes and Unified partners across Iowa. ⭐ They offer year-round sports training and competition in 23 Olympic-type sports. ⭐ Their programs promote physical fitness, self-confidence, and social inclusion. ⭐ The special Olympics Iowa Summer games at Iowa State University in Ames is one of the organization’s biggest competitions and celebrations of the year! My hope for my Capstone project is to partner with Special Olympics Iowa and to embrace universal and inclusive design for people with disabilities! Check out the link below to see what great things Special Olympics Iowa has to offer!

I know many of us are watching the opening of the Olympic Games today. While we are amidst the Olympics, did you know that the Paralympic Games in Paris follow shortly after the Summer Olympics, starting Wed, Aug 28, 2024 – Sun, Sep 8, 2024? I'm bringing this up because today marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signed into law on July 26, 1990. This landmark legislation has been crucial in protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities, promoting accessibility, and ensuring equal opportunities for all. What's the Impact? The ADA has significantly improved the lives of many by advocating for inclusive workplaces and communities. It’s a reminder of the importance of accessibility and the continuous effort needed to create an environment where everyone can thrive. How we can support in the workplace? 👀 Promote awareness: Learn about the ADA and its impact on our society. 📈 Enhance accessibility: Ensure that our workspaces and digital tools are accessible to everyone. 🗣️ Support colleagues: Encourage open dialogue and provide necessary accommodations for team members with disabilities. 🎾 Tennis legend, Martina Navratilova once shared a profound insight that challenges the way society perceives disability. Her words, "Disability is a matter of perception. If you can do just one thing well, you're needed by someone," remind us that each individual possesses unique talents and strengths, regardless of their perceived limitations. 💡 Navratilova's message encourages us to shift our focus from what people cannot do to what they can contribute, fostering a more inclusive society that values the diverse abilities within our communities. 🌍 As we share this powerful quote on social media, let's spark a conversation about embracing the potential in every individual and creating opportunities for everyone to thrive. 🤝 Together, we can build a world where each person is recognised and appreciated for their unique contributions. ✨ #DisabilityAwareness #InclusionMatters #DiverseAbilities #PerceptionIsReality #EmpoweringQuotes #MartinaNavratilova #Tennis #InspiringChange #CelebratingDiversity #EveryoneHasValue #PinkRibbonCommunityServicesAustralia #NDIS #CommunityServices #Australia #SunshineCoast

Nothing about us, Without us – Get GAAD! Did you know that over one billion people identify with having a disability? It’s time to prepare for GAAD next year in May! Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) aims to get everyone talking, thinking, and learning about digital access and inclusion. Where Is Your Company Going To Go? My contributions have been largely unseen for over ten years, and my potential is untapped. Accessibility shouldn't be a PR move. It should be ingrained in the company culture from the ground up. Let's be honest: true accessibility is about more than ramps and accessible bathrooms (though those are important, too). It's about fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and supported in contributing their unique talents. We, the disabled community, have a lot to offer. It's time to open the door and listen. Image Description - Tom at the top of the stairs, in front of the Canary Wharf, One Canada Square set of offices. What’s is Snowball??…Think TripAdvisor for the disabled community. ⭐️Winner Best Digital and Tech Award 2023 ⭐️Top 10 Most Influential People 2023 ⭐️Winner Santander X National Award 2023 ⭐️Winner Santander Global Award 2024 ⭐️Winner Leicestershire Innovation Award 2024 ⭐️Finalist British Diversity Award 2024 ⭐️Nominated Business Success Awards 2024 ⭐️Nominated Entrepreneur of Excellence Award, National Diversity Awards 2024. Snowball Community (known as Snowball) a revolutionary accessibility national and global ward winning app just over a year old and is now the biggest disability app in the world, the app asks disabled people to rate services and businesses by how disability-friendly they are. Users of the app can find a restaurant, tourist attraction, supermarket or coffee shop that is accessible by selecting their location, wherever they are in the world. User can also add place that are not on the Snowball app and leave a review and they have done so by adding tens of thousands of places including changing places and accessible toilet. The best part of the app is that it is supported by Google Maps and if you need to find a place your phone will use Google Maps to guide you there. Disabled travelers and locals can add venues they have found welcoming and accessible for people with physical disabilities, learning disabilities and sensory issues. The more people that add suggestions the bigger the app grows - like a snowball. Snowball is the brainchild of wheelchair-user and founder Simon Sansome. He says: “The app will give people the confidence to socialise with ease as they will be able to see what facilities and venues are available in their immediate location. They will also be able to plan days out, giving people more freedom to access their communities, explore and travel with confidence.” Simon, 42, a former council worker and rugby player, from Leicester, became paralysed from the waist down following a sudden injury in 2014. After a year of recovery, he took his wife to their favourite local restaurant only to realise there was no wheelchair access. Simon set up the Facebook page Snowball Community to highlight good and bad examples of accessibility. It quickly gained 100,000 It is also producing data that now other business can collect and advise local authorities and governments where infrastructure is needed. Users of the app can find blue badge bays in different cities, toilets, places to eat and much more. On top of all this Snowball is launching a National disability membership scheme where Snowball Assessors will visit businesses and rate them from 1 to 5 system similar to a food health hygiene certificate but for access. Another thoughtful piece on the legacy of the International Paralympic Committee should be accessible sports for everyone. Physical activity is important for everyone and that includes people with disabilities. ♿ Inaccessible means inactive - 46% of people with disabilities surveyed said they wanted to be more active but were limited because there was a lack of accessible gyms and trainers that understood disability. ♿ Healthy Choices - the cost of inactivity can be higher for people with disabilities. It is not just about getting "steps in" but maintaining mobility and health. Forbes | Gus Alexiou | Sense | SPLIT SECOND FOUNDATION INC #Accessibility #DisabledAndCapable #DisabilityInclusion
