I'm sharing this article especially for my contacts in HE. Access to HE is a really important route to university for students that, for whatever reason, don't follow the traditional route of A levels, BTEC or T level courses and so return to education after age 18. It's an equivalent level 3 qualification and gets students into university. If you work in a university and do not know about Access to HE this interview with Pam at AIM qualifications is a quick read and gives you a good overview.
Pam Stanway has been at the forefront of Access to HE Diplomas for over two decades, witnessing firsthand their transformative power. In a recent interview, she shares her insights on the latest changes, including a new Subject Descriptor for Nursing and Health Professions and a revised grade scheme focusing on transferable skills. Health Sciences Academy Manager at University of Limerick & UL Hospitals Group, HSE; Executive coach: 'Allegro Coaching'
Collaboration, teamwork and partnership are words that come up time and again when I describe my role. Working across two very different sectors in healthcare and education, I am in a unique position to enable relationships, and leverage the expertise in both worlds to ultimately impact patient care. Q1 2024 so far has been a whirlwind of #collaboration, #teamwork and #partnership through the range of interprofessional student events we have managed. January saw us kick off with our 4th annual 'Early Careers' series aimed at TY student- hundreds of students from across the country joined us to hear from UL Hospitals Group and @MWCH staff, Faculty of Education and Health Sciences UL students, patients and Jack Kavanagh, Donncha O Treasaigh, @LimerickEduSupportCentre. All recordings available here: https://lnkd.in/egua-F5A. Then, last week, University of Limerick team of students, having won the internal heat locally, went on to the national All-Ireland Interprofessional Educational Challenge in Queen's University Belfast, competing with the seven other health sciences Universities in Ireland. Whilst they didn't win, they were a really strong team and gave a really well-rounded performance demonstrating their #teamwork, #collaboration and #partnership. Working in this way doesn't just happen, it needs to be nurtured, promoted and developed. The #HealthSciencesAcademy is grounded in the principles of an academic health sciences system where #collaboration, #teamwork and #partnership leverage infinite opportunities.

Tell me your story: What are times your academic/career plans changed drastically, or your timeline was completely rearranged? Here's mine: My original plan: Take the MCAT senior year, apply to medical schools that May, and take a singular gap year. Problem: I went to a high school overseas so I came in with zero credits. I thought I had space for another minor, so I took extra classes. If I had taken the MCAT senior year, I would have needed to overload my class schedule, potentially dropping my GPA. To graduate on time and with good grades, I must wait to take the MCAT. New plan: Take the MCAT after I graduate. However, this means I take two gap years. Initially, it was frustrating to push back my plans by a year. I now realize how valuable this might be to my medical school application. I will have an entire year to get clinical experience, unhindered by college classes. This reminds me of a teacher who once said to their student: If I want their story to look different, "What is that to you? You must follow me." Those are the words of Jesus to his student Peter. They inspire me not to compare my story and path with anyone else's. What is your story? Please share!
