Have you had 2 stakeholders with completely opposing views? This was my experience at Superline, where a father-son duo approached me. Uncle, who had his fair share of being scammed by interior contractors, had his doubts. Especially as he wasn't exposed to my work online. The son (whom I now consider a friend) had seen our work online, which involved 40+ quality offices delivered on time, so he was on board. But after we presented our designs and having met us, Uncle decided to trust us. And so, we started work. But mid-project, a hired AC technician cut an important building cord he wasn’t supposed to - throwing a curveball for our delivery timeline (and our client’s trust)! In that moment, I had a choice: take accountability or let the situation spiral. I stepped in, smoothed things over with the builder, and paid ₹20,000 out of pocket to fix the issue. Because of that quick decision, we delivered the project on time—in just 45 days—without compromising on quality. The best part was how both the father and son loved the final outcome. So much so that today, we’re working on the 5th office in the same building. That itself speaks volumes. P.S.—3D video of this office is below. Lawyers, doctors, architects...the first time I heard these professionals compared was as a design intern. My architecture colleagues were bemoaning that they didn't earn as much as doctors and lawyers. I have heard this again many times since then. But is financial compensation the only difference? Doctors and lawyers take oaths to serve society--the Hippocratic Oath and the Attorney's Oath. Architects pass a licensing exam, but they don't take an oath. Does this mean necessarily that architects don't serve society as faithfully? One indication of serving society is whether your profession serves everyone. While it's fair to say that people with financial means are better served by doctors and lawyers than people with limited means (especially considering the privatized healthcare system in the US), it's also fair to say that everyone retains professional healthcare and legal services as needed. How about architectural services? Without debating the exact figures, it has been estimated that only 1-2% of residences and 25% of all buildings in the US are designed by architects. The rest of the buildings, 98-99% of residences and 75% of all buildings in the US, are designed (as allowed) by unlicensed designers. (Before concluding that some people aren't served at all by architects, it must be acknowledged that everyone does use architect-designed buildings in specific circumstances, like when going to a hospital, and that people should be free to design and build things such as homes and small businesses for themselves, as long as they are code-compliant.) The general consequence of the shortfall in architect-designed buildings is that although all buildings are designed be safe (and recently somewhat energy efficient as well), most of them are not designed with the functional and aesthetic expertise of professional architects. The broader consequence of this is the somewhat dysfunctional and generally poorly designed environments that we live and work in. Why can't we manage to serve everyone? Is it mostly due to the public not being able to pay for architectural services? Or is it mostly due to the public not valuing what architects have to offer? Or is it mostly due to architects not making enough effort to serve everyone? Whatever the reasons, it must be possible to serve all of society, delivering more value than architects deliver today. As an architect now active in developing technology, I believe that part of the solution is embracing new technology, whether AI or AR, and putting it to work to deliver architect-designed projects within the financial reach of everyone. Then architects might be valued more and earn more. The full need and the full market for architect-designed buildings is being neglected, and society is not being fully served. Are Architects Fairly Compensated? 🤔 Let’s take a look at the numbers. Architects play a pivotal role in shaping our built environment, designing spaces that impact our daily lives. From the initial concept to the final construction, their expertise and creativity are essential. However, many question whether their contributions are adequately recognized in terms of compensation. Considering the immense revenue generated by the projects they design, it seems that architects often receive a disproportionately small share of the pie. While their work lays the foundation for significant financial returns, their compensation may not always reflect this impact. Let's delve into the numbers: * Landscape Architect: $79,320 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) * Interior Designer: $69,958 (Indeed) * Urban and Regional Planners: $85,940 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) * Architectural Designer: $70,851 (Indeed) * Architect: $128,756 (ZipRecruiter) * Industrial Designer: $81, 861 (Indeed) * Architectural Project Manager: $115,938 (salary.com) * Proposal Writer: $77, 618 (Indeed) * Proposal Manager: $99,490 (ZipRecruiter) What do you think? Are architects fairly compensated for their work?
