Want to build a high-performing team? Don't hire experts. Hire people who are OBSESSED. In my company, we embody three camps of obsession: 👉 Sales team? Client-obsessed. 👉 Delivery team? Candidate-obsessed. 👉 Marketing team? Brand-obsessed. I don't want my team to do their job well; I want them to be obsessed with showing up and overdelivering. It takes 10,000 hours of training to become an expert in something, but what's the point if you aren't wholly obsessed with your craft? It is an obsession of ours to create an environment where our candidates not only succeed but thrive in each phase of the candidate journey. There might be some ordinary recruiters in the world, but my team and I refuse to be. If you want to be the best, get people on your team who are obsessed.

Hiring? Do these things to build a strong team... I've hired thousands of people over my career. And the bar was always high. I mean...I worked at Tesla. Here's how I hired the best of the best of the best. I Implemented a structured interview process focused on cultural fit and core values alignment. In addition to assessing technical skills, I included behavioral and situational questions that reveal how candidates handle challenges and collaborate with others. As an example, I asked candidates to describe past experiences where they demonstrated our core values. This practice helped me make sure I hired team members who not only have the required skills, but also resonated with our company culture, leading to a more cohesive and motivated team. If you’re hiring a team, you’re doing so because you want (need) additional support in your business. Whether that’s emotional support and collaboration or to take some tasks off your plate, you and your business need to be getting some sort of return on this new investment. The ROI you receive could be financial, but it can also be time–depending on what role you’re actually hiring for. Both are incredibly valuable. But measuring ROI of a team member can be a slippery slope, especially when some roles don’t directly impact sales and revenue.
