I recently came across a heart-warming article about a song and music video titled "Who Cares?", created to shine a positive light on the social care sector. This touching track, performed by Ivor-Novello award-nominated Boo Hewerdine and the Sing Out! South Craven Choir, was released by the Independent Care Group in York and North Yorkshire. How do we show our team that we value them not just on day one but throughout their career with you? It is very common in the care sector that a vacancy in the team promotes panic and a rush to recruit and on board as soon as possible. The candidate lost in the process. A vacancy could mean a compromise to the care in some way. So how do we ensure that this same individual then doesn't become that exact same vacancy you were looking to fill? How do we show we care? When working as a Care Manager I devised an initiative for my team. The "Carer Support Plan". Once on boarded our new team member would come and sit with me personally and tell me all about who they are, what support they may need and their drive to work in the sector. Why should support plans be reserved just for those who ask to be cared for? These support plans show our team that "vulnerability" is found in everyone. Everyone will need to be shown care at some point. Take the time to see and know your team and demonstrate that you can be a safe space. Opportunities to understand our team members promotes staff satisfaction and retention.
