Good afternoon LinkedIn, I'm excited to announce the starting of a new student club at Purdue University for National Defense Technology; my aim is to create an organization within Purdue where students passionate about topics pertaining to national defense can come together and discuss the current events, emerging technologies, and developments regarding the ever-changing modern battlespace. Purdue is home to many clubs which already set students up for successful careers in a vast range of industries; the prime example being Purdue Space Program: A SEDS Chapter which naturally feeds students into both internships and entry positions at companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin, or other leading aerospace companies. Having now worked two summers with the Air Force Materiel Command, and only becoming further interested in a career in defense, I find the lack of student-driven involvement with the Department of Defense to be surprising. It is my belief that fostering such engagement can significantly benefit our national defense and security workforce by nurturing the interests and skills of students in this field early on. I have put together a short interest form for any Purdue student or faculty who may be interested in getting involved, things are very much so still in the works, so your ideas and involvement are very welcome. Week SIX of my Skillbridge Fellowship at Lockheed Martin through Hiring Our Heroes completed! The time is FLYING but not a single minute of it is wasted. This past week I really put my nose to the grindstone, building a foundation for an incredible project with the goal of assisting new employees utilizing the effectiveness of mentorship. In addition, the needle moved a bit more on a very ambitious project that isn’t quite ready for announcement BUT when it does happen (and I really believe it will), I’ll take a victory lap on this platform. Lastly, we launched our second round of the pilot virtual workshop where meaningful advice and information was shared between knowledgeable and experienced Lockheed employees to those in our military communities (active duty, veterans, spouses, dependents, and caregivers). On a more personal side, it is stunning to think I’m halfway through my Fellowship. I’m asked pretty frequently if my Skillbridge is going to get me a job and that’s a tough one to answer. First and foremost, no, my Skillbridge by itself is NOT going to get me a job. It’s important to understand that a Skillbridge is just that, meant to bridge the gap between my military skills and experiences and that of the non-military (ie, “civilian”) workplace. To that end, my Skillbridge has been value added on a daily basis! But that doesn’t “get me a job”. What it DOES give is the best tools to enhance my brand and the things which make me marketable! It DOES allow me the access and experiences to a new, exciting business cultures and ways of getting things accomplished! Those are the ways that Skillbridge is going to help me “get a job”. And not just a “job”. A meaningful, fulfilling, career in a space that energizes and motivates me… where I can add value, create meaningful change, and continue investing in others so they can one day do the same. Building collaborative teams has been a great passion throughout my career. I constantly find myself returning to the challenge of building a collaborative, high-functioning, diverse team. Working in Marine Corps aviation command and control, I was responsible for integrating airborne capabilities with ground operations. As a graduate student, I studied fire control and coordination in the Pacific War. Along the way, I became fascinated with the question: how can you get people from different communities to come together and serve a higher purpose that transcends their individual identity or tribe? In the military, we place a premium on common identity. We prioritize conformity, compliance, and allegiance. Training destroys the ego. The word “I” doesn’t fit. At Frontier Design, we approach things a bit differently. We don’t attend boot camp, but we do develop a collective identity - it means something to be a part of THIS team. Working together on difficult projects builds relationships that cannot be replicated in any other manner. If someone is away, gets sick, or struggles with a task, the rest of us are here to pick them up. What separates the great teams you’ve been on from those that struggle?
