Why reward schemes for warehouse workers work! Bonus schemes for hourly paid workers aren’t a new concept, yet surprisingly, despite labour and skills shortages being a longstanding headache for the sector, employee reward schemes have previously not seemed popular across the industry. In the first of a two-part blog, Dave Morris, Operations Director at Vitesse® explains the importance of introducing incentives and rewards for staff as a way of boosting overall #efficiency and morale in your #warehouse. Recognising and #rewarding hard-working and well performing staff is surely something of a no-brainer when faced with today’s major challenges in attracting, motivating and retaining good workers. The rise of online shopping and order fulfilment, together with the rapid growth of warehousing, have led to a perfect storm of staffing issues with vacancy rates high across the industry. With warehouse talent becoming a scarce resource for businesses, a scramble has ensured to become the employer of choice as companies bid to attract and retain the very best people. But becoming the employer of choice is only half the battle. Keeping employees happy, well-motivated and engaged is an ongoing requirement for a successful #operation. Accordingly, in recent years warehouse workers have seen many improvements to their working environment. From canteen facility upgrades, training room refurbishments, staff surveys, better quality uniforms, flexible working arrangements, enhanced communication and improved pay rates. Is HR department of these days counter productive and wastage ? Yes , let me explain why . I am fortunate to work and start my career with an organization which does not have a so-called HR department level . Military. Operational teams who know their people and their needs handle this function at unit level . At HQ level where recruitment,payrolls ,promotions and training to be handled , also were handled by people from operations or maintenance or project ,transferred to those offices, without having a HR team who are not operational or maintenance or project teams . Operational teams also learns HR functions hence employing a department and wasting huge funds of companies of this department called HR and posts like CHRO is wasteful and counter productive . Operational teams also very well can take care of labor issues . I always handled all labor issues when it was needed in those days of labor union . Usually labor issues are created by the HR department by instigating workers against their department heads to show their superiority . Usually I feel this department is a waste of money , irritating to other operational departments and mosquitos or parasites in an organization. This is purely my opinion but vouched by many of my colleagues . It is the duty of operational heads to recruit ,reward and train their people . HR who have no background of operations , maintenance or project have no expertise in doing these functions. It is high time that we get this unwanted department out from all organizations and operational ( profit making ones ) , maintenance and project ( who reduces expenses to get best profit ) start taking care of their men under them without giving them under systems like balanced scorecard etc , which are mere paper works and traps devised by HR who have no idea to buy to destroy organizations and show the need and importance of such department . Strong operational , maintenance or project department heads should never allow such interference in thier functions. I have seen two organizations which got sold because both companies gave a lot of importance to this department ,who sat and irritated sales and marketing departments ,or supported poor performers as they were daily praising the HR head ! Let me make it clear ,having a HR department is not bad but it should be manned by people from operations, maintenance or projects departments. For example in a hotel ,if an HR head or trainning head is needed it should be either a ex GM ,Front office Manager ,or ex chief Engineer or Ex Executive housekeeper . Likewise in all other industries.

Employees have been disciplined in the past for using sick leave as time off to do paid work for others. A co-worker tells you confidentially that he knows the individual involved and that he was told that these were the circumstances involved with his absence. What do you do? A. Arrange to discuss this with your manager immediately as this cannot be allowed to continue. B. Confront the individual, making it clear that this behavior is unacceptable. C. Speak to the individual to find out whether this is true. D. Speak further with the co-worker to find out what other information he has on the matter. #SHRM
