Myreill is such a joy! Check out her story below!
21-year-old Myreill discovered the #PittsburghJobCorpsCenter when searching online for ways to further her education outside of a 🏫traditional high school, where she felt uncomfortable. It was a perfect fit. “At Job Corps, I was able to get my high school diploma, driver’s license and I’m almost finished completing the culinary trade,” said Myreill. “All the staff are very wonderful and helped me with a lot. I have a huge selection of lovely people I can connect with. The best part I can say is I’ve made some really great connections and I have a great instructor who teaches very well. I promise you when you put your head together and know what you want to do and focus on yourself, you can get a lot of benefits from Job Corps, and you want to take advantage of that.” 🌟This ambitious girl takes a bus to Job Corps every day and says the great resources and staff at the Pittsburgh campus make it all worthwhile. THIS IS LEADERSHIP My 16 year old has been at his new part-time job for just over a month. He works at Brave Brewing in Hastings, which is a must-do if you’re ever in these parts (and like great beer, and fat burgers). Let me tell you how owners Gemma and Matt treat their student staff. - Like the young adults they are, which means a proper job interview, proper contract, and proper rosters. - Decent pay with a starting rate that sits well above minimum wage. - Full inclusivity and respect for diversity, gender pronouns, and a “safer spaces” policy on behaviour and how the Brave community operates. - Paid staff training days. - An atmosphere that supports his learning and development (he already knows more about beer than I do). - A long list of staff perks (he can’t wait to be old enough to access the beer-related ones!) - Understanding. My son woke up with a hacking cough and runny nose this morning. He’d already asked for next Saturday off to attend an event and was nervous to call in sick because it would mean letting them down two weeks running. But when he rang, all he got was empathy and compassion. Too often, part timers are treated as a bit of a commodity. Students are viewed as cheap labour, uncommitted and probably unreliable. But give them the tools and they will rise to the challenge. This is true leadership.

Fair Chance Hiring allows employers to develop loyal talent and reduce turnover. Leaders from the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma have seen this firsthand by utilizing OKC Metro Alliance, Inc.'s Firstep program, which helps formerly incarcerated individuals, like Chris Eaton, reenter the workforce without experiencing barriers. "While a college degree is a worthwhile path to prosperity, it isn’t the only one." We're so inspired by Ted Decker, CEO of The Home Depot, and John Furner, CEO of #TearThePaperCeiling Partner Walmart's "Not Everyone Needs a College Degree" op-ed on The Wall Street Journal! STARs- workers Skilled Through Alternative Routes rather than a college degree make up 50% of workers in the US. STARs have developed valuable skills on the job, through military service, in community college, or through other alternative routes. We're delighted to see Walmart and The Home Depot see STARs by valuing skills above degrees and recognizing that workers can develop skills in many different ways. When employers #HireSTARs, they gain access massive and diverse pool of skilled candidates for hard-to-fill jobs, while STARs get a fair chance to earn the higher wages that lead to upward economic mobility.
