My recent experience with AFCA is that there has been inordinate delay in progressing matters - plus fundamental issues concerning procedural fairness have also arisen. This post is interesting in that that it shows how AFCA wishes to position itself - sorting out disagreements with a financial firm. In fact, AFCA has a very substantive jurisdiction which in WA would cover disputes that otherwise would be resolved by the Supreme Court - AFCA can now consider disputes where the amount claimed is $1,263,000 and it can award up to $631,500. With respect to some disputes, its jurisdiction is unlimited. My concern being that there appears to be a mismatch between how AFCA positions itself and how it applies its Rules - versus the very substantive jurisdiction that it actually has (which would ordinarily be exercised by a Court).
Last week the AFCA Community Engagement Team was on the lands of the Kaurna People, at the Disability, Ageing and Lifestyle Expo in Adelaide, South Australia. We were pleased to engage alongside a diverse range of exhibitors, connecting older people, and people with disabilities (and their families and carers) with helpful services. Happy Election Day! I've been meaning to post this for over a week, and then I realised there was no better day to share it than polling day... I first connected with Clare Wightman, Mel Smith, and the Grapevine Cov and Warks family while running the Jo Cox Foundation, searching for partners to carry forward Jo’s legacy. Eight years later, I feel incredibly fortunate to continue to learn from them. Grapevine’s magic lies in its ability to blend various practices from diverse fields: the best of community organising, asset-based community development, relational approaches, and systemic thinking, all woven together to drive change on terms defined by the communities it serves. Last week, I spent a special couple of hours at a Grapevine event featuring the one and only Marshall Ganz, community organiser extraordinaire, along with a host of other inspiring speakers. Together, Marshall and Grapevine reminded everyone who came of an increasingly acknowledged truth: place-based groups can hold some of the most significant and impactful ideas. If that’s not a valuable reminder after the past few weeks of election circus finishing today with so much talk about dogs at polling stations, I don’t know what is. Sometimes it can seem there’s no option but for those of us interested in (progressive) change to adopt a top-down, power-over mode of leadership, especially when time and resources are scarce. Grapevine offers a glimpse of a much-needed alternative. In Marshall's words: "Hope is the belief in the plausibility of the possible." Grapevine is one of the many relationship-centred beacons I look to for light, and I hope any future government that knows what's good for it and the country might do the same. https://lnkd.in/eCyRbpFs

via Hispanics in Philanthropy & Native Americans in Philanthropy "We are excited to host this gathering in City of Albuquerque, New Mexico—ancestral lands of the #Pueblo, #Navajo, and #Apache peoples; and home to #Hispanic communities whose presence spans centuries. Today, Native American citizens make up 12.4% of New Mexico's population (compared to 1.7% nationally), while Hispanic residents comprise approximately 50% (versus 16% nationally). During what we foresee to be a #challenging year in which our #communities will have to #protect ourselves against #extremistpolicies, this space of #healing, #connecting, and #strategizing is especially important." PHI's Build Healthy Places Network has announced the awardees of their Community Innovations for Racial Equity (CIRE) initiative, a program aimed at tackling structural racism and health inequities in disinvested communities. Supported by a generous grant from the Kresge Foundation, these five community development organizations, led by and serving Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities, have demonstrated a strong commitment to community-led strategies and racial equity. Each organization will receive a $50,000 grant. "We are so excited to partner with these incredible organizations that are leading the way in community-driven solutions for racial equity. Through the CIRE initiative, we aim to amplify their impact and foster a collaborative learning environment that will benefit communities across the nation," said PHI's Kevin O. How do we Honor and Value our elders? It's crucial to acknowledge the impact of isolation on their well-being, as seen in nursing homes. I care for my father, whose life was prolonged by intentionally fostering sources of love. Unfortunately, current accommodations lack comfort and intergenerational activities. The POD aims to address this gap, fostering inclusivity for ALL ages. Join me in supporting a brighter future for humanity by liking and subscribing. Let's start building a more connected community together. https://lnkd.in/eeFAfSHf

The onus of forging a brighter future rests not solely on established institutions, but squarely on the shoulders of today's youth. Their dynamism, unburdened by entrenched ideologies, positions them uniquely to challenge the status quo and champion transformative change. Let us empower this generation, providing the platforms and resources necessary to harness their boundless potential. Their active engagement in community development—through innovative initiatives, collaborative projects, and courageous advocacy—is not merely desirable, but indispensable to creating sustainable, equitable communities for all. The time for decisive action is now; the future depends on the empowered youth of today.

At Stonewall CCDC, we have spent 10 years building our housing practice, while developing innovative new strategies to deliver safe and LGBTQ-welcoming senior housing and healthcare. And now we are ready to make some moves... Statewide Expansion – The New York Attorney General’s office has approved an amendment to our articles of incorporation and Stonewall CDC is now a statewide organization. Monies raised for our New York City programs will remain segregated for City purposes, and our main focus of activity will continue to be the five boroughs, but this will allow us to engage some opportunities that have been trying to come our way from around the state. More on that as those opportunities develop. National Expansion - After a strategic framework planning process with our board of directors and the ensuing two years’ of discussion that followed, we have voted to create a new companion organization tailored specifically to allow us to: Own and lease property Provide LGBTQ-competent home care Work nationwide Stonewall CDC has gathered a large network of highly qualified individuals and companies to help us work through the details. This means that we will be moving to implementation with our two flagship innovations The Stonewall Bridge and the Community Properties Portfolio.
