Staff at Northumberland Wildlife Trust were able to swap Blue Monday for Brew Monday this week, thanks to players of @PeoplesPostcodeLottery. Blue Monday is the name given to the third Monday in January and is often when people are feeling at their lowest ebb following seasonal festivities, overspending in the January sales, dark mornings and wintery weather. So, what better way to banish the winter ‘blues’ than for staff to join the Trust’s EDI team for tea and cake and the chance to have a catch up with colleagues and friends. Thanks again to all the wonderful #PostcodeLotteryPeople for making this possible!

Happy Halloween! 🎃 Did you know around 14.5 million pumpkins end up as waste each Halloween in the UK alone? That’s 18,000 tonnes of potential compost, wildlife food and snacks going to waste! Here are some easy ideas for you to reuse your pumpkins after this Halloween: 🕯 Pumpkins break down quickly, making them a perfect addition to your compost. 🕸 Many animals love pumpkins. Break it into pieces and leave it out in your garden to attract deer, birds, squirrels, and other wildlife. 🦇 Cut your pumpkin in half, remove the seeds, and fill it with birdseed. Hang it or place it in the garden for a cheap and easy bird feeder. 🥧 Use the pumpkin flesh to make soup, pies or smoothies. 👻 Bury small chunks of pumpkin directly in your garden. They’ll break down over the winter and add nutrients to your soil. What other ideas do you have to dispose of your pumpkin??? Credits to Sophie Stott for this unbelievable pumpkin carving!

#MyCatDoesThat: Stalking prey is an important behavior for young wild cats to learn — and it's something house cats do, too. However, your pet is probably stalking the next bowl of food or your house guest, while this puma in Chilean Patagonia is likely after a guanaco. Hungry cats are hungry cats, though — there's often little difference between wild and small cats. Does your cat do this? Send to a friend and tag your pet doing the same thing! Tag @pantheracats and use #MyCatDoesThat! We might reshare! To learn more about pumas: panthera.org/cat/puma

National Honey Bee Day, celebrated annually on the third Saturday of August, is an awareness day when beekeepers, beekeeping clubs and associations, and honey bee enthusiasts from across the United States celebrate honey bees and recognize their contribution to humans' everyday lives as a means of protecting this critical species. For those of you wondering whether about the bond that a beekeeper has with their honey bees. The relationship between beekeepers and honey bees, also known as apiculture, is an example of mutualism, which is a mutually beneficial relationship between two different species. The relationship has evolved over thousands of years, from simple honey hunting to more sophisticated beekeeping techniques. Today, beekeepers are almost like key parts of the bee colony, providing bees with food, protection, and other necessities. In return, bees can improve human health both physically and mentally. PSA from the City of Toronto. Every year around this time, we get an increase of people letting us know about coyote sightings. Coyotes are an important part of our ecosystem as they help control our rodent and rabbit populations. But with no leaves on the trees, we tend to see them a bit more during winter. A few facts about coyotes: 🐈 Coyotes are timid in nature so they generally do not pose a danger to people, but they can for pets (so keep pets supervised if you let them out). 🌔 They are particularly active at dusk and dawn. 🏘️ Coyotes thrive in urban areas because of the abundance of food and shelter available. coyotes will take whatever food is available. (But please, don’t feed them!) 💘Coyote mating season is January to March so we may see them more during this time. 🦮Most encounters with coyotes occur when people leave out food and garbage intentionally or by accident. Coyotes and dogs may have negative encounters if people have their dogs off leash, causing a coyote to defend itself and its young. This is why it’s important to keep your dog on a leash when you’re not in an off-leash area. At the Honey Bee Garden exhibit, you will see a living bee hive, get the inside scoop on bee colonies, and see how plants, bees, and people all work together to produce honey and so much more. What do you know about the honey bee? Here are some fun facts about these critically important creatures: 🐝 Life span varies with the bee's job. Queens live the longest at three to five years. Workers live two to four months. 🐝 Drones (the males) only live a maximum of 90 days - and less if they breed! 🐝 Every hive has a dance floor. When a worker finds a new field of flowers, she does a special dance (the "waggle dance") to show the others where and how far away the blossoms are. 🐝 Using their wings, workers fan drops of water on the hive floor to air-condition their homes in summer. 🐝 Honey bees pollinate many of our foods, such as apples, watermelons, and broccoli. Without bees, we would lose many of the foods we enjoy today. 🐝 Honey bees were brought to America from Europe by the early settlers. 🐝 They have made honey from flowering plants for 10 to 12 million years. #Bees #NorthCarolinaZoo #NCZoo #WildlifeProtection #NaturalHabitat #ZooExperience #AsheboroNC #NatureLovers #AnimalConservation #VisitNC

Do the right thing.
Approximately 46 million turkeys are killed for Thanksgiving every year in the U.S. Many Americans even refer to the holiday as “Turkey Day” and devour them piece by piece—giblets, gizzards and all. Before you baste and bake another turkey, consider that these birds are sentient individuals who enjoy having their feathers stroked, gobbling along to music and playing together. With all the festive vegan options available, there’s no good excuse to eat turkeys or other animals for Thanksgiving or at any other time of the year. Have a happy and humane holiday! https://lnkd.in/ei4k5j9W #turkey #facts #sentient #ThanksVegan #vegan #FriendsNotFood #MeatIsMurder #Reasons2GoVegan #NotOurs2Eat #GoVegan #AnimalRights #Hero4Animals

Happy Halloween! 🎃 This year, let’s make our Halloween decorations not just spooky but also safe for our local wildlife! Many animals, from birds to bats to large mammals, can be affected by common holiday decor. Here are some simple ways to enjoy the season while protecting our wildlife neighbors: 1. Avoid fake spider webs and decorations with loops or strings: These can entangle wildlife and lead to injury. Opt for non-string-based decorations or keep them indoors. 2. Be cautious with motion-activated lights and noise makers: These can startle and stress crepuscular and nocturnal animals. Place them away from nests or known animal habitats. 3. Keep electrical cords out of reach: Wildlife might chew on cords, risking electrocution. Elevate or cover cords to ensure safety. 4. Use non-toxic materials on outdoor pumpkins: Painted pumpkins add festive flair, but using non-toxic paints ensures they’re safe if wildlife nibbles on them. Additionally, consider adding fresh water sources, planting native species for natural food, donating to your local licensed wildlife rehab center, and keeping pets indoors at night to protect nocturnal animals. Reducing decorative lighting can also help limit light pollution, creating a friendlier environment for our wild neighbors. Together, let’s make this Halloween safe and enjoyable for everyone—wildlife included! 👻 Learn more at www.nocowildlife.org
