NYC Dinner was a blast! We pulled it together in just a week, which is pretty impressive. Huge shoutout to Inessa Chirkina, our R-Global New York Lead, who was a rockstar helping out remotely. (She couldn't fly in from Boston because of her adorable poodle, Pierre – can't blame her!) I’m not a fan of those stiff, "networking for networking's sake" events. I like to get people together to really connect and see how we can help each other out. At these gatherings, we usually do a little icebreaker to get the conversation going. I’ll ask you to tell us a quick, interesting thing about yourself. Then, we’ll dive into two questions: • What's been the biggest highlight for you – personally or professionally – in the past month? • And what's something you need help with right now? 🌟 Building Community Through Networking 🌟 In a world where connections are just a click away, the power of personal, meaningful interactions is often underestimated. But, it's these very connections that weave the fabric of our communities, stronger and more vibrant. This week, I had the privilege of attending 2. local networking events, and it was a vivid reminder of the magic that happens when individuals come together, not just to exchange business cards, but to share stories, challenges, and triumphs. Here's what I learned about building relationships in our community: 1. **Listen More Than You Speak**: True networking is about understanding others. The most memorable conversations were those where I learned about someone’s passions, not just their profession. 2. **Offer Value Without Expectation**: Whether it’s a piece of advice, a helpful contact, or even just a genuine compliment, offering something without expecting anything in return is the cornerstone of meaningful relationships. 3. **Be Consistently Present**: Showing up regularly at community events, workshops, and meetings makes you a familiar face, and familiarity breeds trust. 4. **Follow Up with Intent**: After meeting someone, I make it a point to reach out with a personalized message. It’s a small gesture, but it shows you value the connection. 5. **Diversify Your Network**: Engaging with people from different industries, backgrounds, and experiences enriches your understanding and appreciation of the community. As I reflect on the power of networking within our community, I'm inspired to not only pursue my goals but to support others in achieving theirs. Let’s continue to build bridges, not just networks. Because at the end of the day, it’s the strength of our relationships that defines the success of our community. Curated connections you say...what's the point of that then? Shouldn't you just throw a load of "business people" in a room and let them figure it out for themselves? Do you need a schedule when organizing an event? Sure, it’s better. If you host the same event every month, people start to expect it. They make time for it. But then, what about organizing an event just 3 days in advance? That’s a totally different mindset. And it is possible. Sure, you have very little time to promote it. Who might not feel as welcome at your #Conference welcoming #Event? I remain (surprised, befuddled, disappointed, dismayed, et al) that so many large conferences have a mass reception or social event as their first informal gathering.   Those events are great for people who naturally thrive in that environment or for attendees who can reconnect with others they already know.   But they can offer a chilly shoulder to many others. It can be off-putting to walk into a space filled with people and only see strangers.   Better perhaps to start with smaller events targeted for like-minded attendees (regions, functional positions, types of organizations, disciplines, career stages, shared interests) or to incorporate opportunities for those connections in any mass gathering. Either would help individuals build a critical social mass with which to share the conference experience as it unfolds.   Aiming first for lower-case communities may be a faster route to achieving #Community capital overall.
