Here's my 3 minute closing argument (we had a strict start and stop) which I delivered at Thursday's League of Minority Voters -Oregon Chapter event. In it, I talk about why I'm the best fit to be District 3's congressman. I also talk about power structures and how their determination of political "viability" leads to incorrectly narrowing candidates which then get sold to the voting public as "the choices." This process is not only outdated and nonsensical, it's contrary to representative democracy and everything we are fighting for to change about politics. If you were curious, Susheela and Maxine were not present at this event which is fascinating because 1. It's kind of an important one to attend and 2. They had 3 months notice about the event and its time, date, and location never changed. Thank you League of Minority Voters for putting on this great event. Thank you People's AV Company for filming the event.

With #SuperTuesday underway today, the national media remains focused on the presidential horse race, with 15 states and American Samoa deciding on party nominees. But state primaries decide the candidates for the offices that set most of the nation’s public policy, including governors, legislators, secretaries of state and attorneys general, among others. To reflect the possibility of a sudden increase in these newer models for selecting party nominees, NCSL has created a new category of primaries outside the open-to-closed scale: the “multiparty” primary. These systems divorce the concept of party nominees from primary elections by placing all candidates on a single ballot regardless of party, allowing multiple candidates from the same party to advance to the general election. I don’t often post on LinkedIn, especially about something as volatile or divisive as politics, but there's a trend I've noticed in the last few Presidential elections that I'd like to hear others' thoughts and opinions on. The trend revolves around the sentiment that anyone other than a Republican or Democrat has no chance of actually making it into office. Often, this leads to people foregoing voting for someone they truly support and instead voting for a candidate who "has a chance" and is seen as a better option than the other major contender. Furthermore, other candidates are often shunned and ostracized by news networks. For instance, RFK Jr. was denied access to debates after meeting the requirements to join the other contenders on stage. In my view, this seriously undermines the effectiveness and intention of our voting system and contributes to the polarization we see today. What are your thoughts? (Civilized and respectful responses only, please.) For reference, here is a YouTube link of RFK Jr. answering debate questions: https://lnkd.in/gcqiiqRv

One question to ask yourself – Is democracy better served by fearful censorship or by vigorous transparency debate? Powerful people seek to abuse the rules in their favor by preventing speech and free debate that is threatening to their vested interests. Good people in their silence only strengthen the power of the authoritarians. In the long-term, this makes everyone worse off. One first step to countering these abuses is to sign this petition to let RFK Jr. take the debate stage against Trump and Biden. We need all the good ideas to be heard, not just the "approved" ones. https://lnkd.in/eHyzERzs

As we move into a new election year, make sure to vote. Whether you're a Democrat, Independent, or Republican it's what makes democracy work and America strong. In the words of Alexander Hamilton... "The subject speaks its own importance; comprehending in its consequences nothing less than the existence of the UNION, the safety and welfare of the parts of which it is composed, the fate of an empire in many respects the most interesting in the world. It has been frequently remarked that it seems to have been reserved to the people of this country, by their conduct and example, to decide the important question, whether societies of men are really capable or not of establishing good government from reflection and choice, or whether they are forever destined to depend for their political constitutions on accident and force." I choose reflection and choice. My vote reflects my choice, and your vote is your choice. So, get out and vote.

50% of eligible voters don’t vote! At some point truth has to overshadow lies. Better leadership has to triumph poor leadership. Dignity, honor and respect has to takeover the undignified, the dishonorable and those who are disrespectful. But: instead of complaining about your political leaders, how about you vote first? Don’t boo our government . Vote! Want an opinion? You better vote first. https://lnkd.in/eam4yuR3

I ghostwrite educational email courses for civics education and nonpartisan organizations. | Political analyst | Researcher | Writer
This is the second in a series of posts where I look at the states that were won by Donald Trump in 2016 but then flipped away from him in 2020. It examines some of the factors that made these states go from red to blue, compares the 2020 presidential contest alongside other recent elections (with some caveats), and discusses what could happen in 2024. The first post looked at Arizona. Today looks at Georgia. From 1996 to 2016, the state went to the Republican presidential candidate, most of the time definitively so. But Joe Biden broke that streak, defeating Trump by less than 12,000 votes in the state. Will Trump be able to take the state back in 2024? What do other elections in the state have to say about the partisan leanings of Georgia? I discuss this and more in today's post. And if you enjoy the article, please share with your network. #politics #2024elections #presidentialelection #georgia #politicalscience #politicalcampaigns #politicalanalysis #politicalinsights
