Enigma cipher machines were designed to create complex encrypted messages that were almost impossible to break. Before and during the Second World War, Germany and its allies were using Enigma machines on the battlefield, at sea, in the sky and within its secret services, to send military messages. #DancetheCurriculum #school #escuelas #history #historia #curriculum #creativeschools #escuelascreativas

During periods of colonization, imperial powers often employed terms like "pacification," "civilizing mission," or "manifest destiny" to describe their actions. These terms, often used by imperial forces, were intended to shape narratives in their favor. For example, the term "pacification" might be used to justify military actions that suppress resistance but may not accurately represent the experiences or perspectives of the colonized populations. The power dynamics involved in framing narratives can influence how historical events are perceived. #Example of Power Dynamics and Imperial Narratives

Like Clausewitz, the strategic thinking of Alfred Thayer Mahan is often misunderstood and frequently misappropriated by those who have read only the first chapter of his well-known work: The Influence of Sea Power Upon History. Mahan's writings have been both misquoted and quoted out of context, sprinkled like so much seasoning atop the works of lesser minds. Over the decades, his novel concept of seapower and of the pervasiveness of its noiseless but ceaseless effect upon the rise and fall of nations has been distorted into a crude concept of combat superiority. This excellent book by Nicholas A. Lambert and published by the U.S. Naval Institute dashes all of that upon the proverbial rocks by examining the totality of Mahan's writing over decades and restoring him to his rightful place at the doyen of maritime statecraft. Mahan's ideas about the centrality of commercial and economic competition to naval affairs should be much better understood, and our rivals have certainly taken them to heart over the past decades. It is long past time we remembered them. #seapower #navy #defense #strategy #nationalsecurity #maritimestatecraft #strategicthinking
