NOMV would like to extend a tremendous congratulations to Dr. Treyton Diggs for being named Westminster Kennel Club’s Veterinarian of the Year for 2024. This is an extraordinary achievement, and well deserved! “For me, this award symbolizes faith, hope and possibility and confirms that dreams accompanied with dedication, perseverance and grit can become a reality. It also validates the impact of veterinary medicine and simultaneously teaches our children and students that our work is not in vain and that “what we do in life echoes in eternity.” Hence, I implore and charge each one of you to live your legacy and continue to be the change you want to see in the world.” – Dr. Treyton Diggs We would also like to profoundly thank the Westminster Kennel Club for their $10,000 donation to NOMV in honor of Dr. Diggs. November is #NationalPetCancerAwarenessMonth. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1 in 4 dogs and 1 in 5 cats will develop cancer in their lifetimes. Losing a beloved pet is often an emotionally devastating experience. Yet as a society, we do not recognize how painful pet loss can be and how much it can impair our emotional and physical health. At GrieveWell, we believe that all grief is valid. Here is an article from Dr. Gerald S. Post, a board-certified specialist in veterinary oncology, on 10 warning signs of cancer in both dogs and cats - https://lnkd.in/djXPEcJh. Many pet owners today are struggling with the rising cost of veterinary care. According to this The New York Times article, veterinary prices have increased by over 60 percent in the past decade. Nonprofit clinics like Emancipet, which are community-funded, play a crucial role in keeping pets and their owners together. This is why our research with the ASPCA on high-volume, low-cost heartworm treatment is so important. You can read more about it in this important report: https://nyti.ms/45L6yJr

Postoperative regurgitation poses a common concern following general anesthesia in dogs, particularly those with short noses or undergoing specific surgeries. Given the heightened risk of pneumonia, this becomes a critical issue in veterinary medicine. 😷🐕 Our pioneering research zeroes in on a promising solution! Methylnaltrexone (MNTX), recognized in human medicine, suppresses opioid effects in the intestines while preserving pain relief properties. Our objective is to delineate the metabolism rate of MNTX in healthy dogs, laying the foundation for a subsequent study to assess its effectiveness in mitigating postoperative regurgitation. 💊🩺 As a non-profit reliant on philanthropy, your support can have a meaningful impact! I found today's article quite insightful. I have observed a similar trend of increasing costs in my country, reflecting a global issue in veterinary care. The increasing role of big companies is likely to put more pressure on prices due to the need for financial returns for investors, further increasing the economic burden on pet owners. If this is happening now in the US, which has a significantly broader network of non-profit vet clinics nationwide than the Global South, imagine the impact when these giant investors start operations in countries without even a minimal support system. https://lnkd.in/dTQa3K_g

Today, on #WorldSpayDay, we're thrilled to announce a transformative grant to COMMUNITY ANIMAL MEDICINE PROJECT, INC. (CAMP)! Since their launch in 2007, Michelson Found Animals has been an integral partner to CAMP Clinics, in which time CAMP has spayed and neutered over 300,000 dogs and cats. The $1 million grant will be used to: - Expand access to affordable veterinary care: Fund a portion of the purchase of a new property in South Los Angeles, transforming it into a low-cost veterinary clinic and high-volume training center. This expansion will significantly increase the number of pets served annually by CAMP Clinics. - Increase spay/neuter surgeries: Support CAMP’s spay/neuter program, offering affordable surgeries to pet owners in historically excluded communities. This will help control pet overpopulation, reduce the number of animals entering shelters, and ultimately save lives. - Enhance veterinary training: Fund training programs for veterinarians in HQHVSN surgeries, a proven method for increasing access to affordable spay/neuter services while maintaining high standards of care. This grant is a giant leap forward for animal welfare in SoCal! Together with CAMP Clinics, we're building a future where every pet receives the care they deserve. Retired Veterinary Professional
2wFinally there might be fellow professionals who are taking notice. AVMA has become an arm of corporate America dedicated to creating indentured servants in what was once a thriving independent profession. When I entered the profession in 1977 AVMA insurance programs were stellar examples of how it should be. Unfortunately those times are distant memories for my generation and hidden from the current generation.
