A recent study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association examined the mental and emotional well-being of more than 4,600 U.S. veterinarians. Sponsored by Merck Animal Health, the study assessed the levels of burn-out, well-being, and mental health of veterinarians using scientific methods. It also compared those figures to those of non-veterinarians in the general population. "The top factors that were identified in achieving work-life balance were spending time with family, socializing with friends, exercising regularly, and routinely sleeping 8 hours per night." It's not rocket science. Achieving a healthy work life balance as a vet is realistic - especially if you're working in an area with a dedicated after hours facility. Every day I journal the NEWS acronym - did I: - Eat well? (Nutrition) - Increase my heart rate for over 30 mins? (Exercise) - Meditate for at least 10 minutes? (Wellness) - Get a decent night of rest (Sleep) Most of the factors that will improve your happiness at work are within your control.

Great article! One positive is seeing a 10% increase in the last 5 years of veterinarians seeking mental health treatment - still a way to go but a great step in the right direction
