We had a new employee start this week. In our first one on one, he asked a simple question: "When building partnerships for Allstar, what sort of folks are you talking to at these other companies?" - and I couldn't hold back my laughter. Why? In gaming and esports, every company is built differently. There is no playbook. He was really asking, "Am I targeting CEOs? Chief Business Officers? Product Managers?" and there was not a good answer I could give. We work with companies building inside of all sorts of ecosystems - #Fortnite, #LeagueOfLegends, #CounterStrike, #DOTA2, #RocketLeague, the list goes on. But, there is never any one single corporate structure at these companies. A site boasting tens of millions of monthly active users, could have 5 people working on it behind the scenes. Maybe the CEO is the lead developer. An analytics platform that is just getting off the ground might have 30 employees, with 5 of them directly working on business development. Every call is different. I could be talking to a seasoned business professional, or some person who made a really cool product in a game their love, and are now beginning their first stages of growth - building the plane as they fly. And that's what I love about this industry. It's literally a RPG - and everyone has a different S.P.E.C.I.A.L. (you know I had to throw in a #Fallout reference here - what a show). If you're a CEO, or a BizDev person, or a Product Manager, or literally anyone building in games that wants to superpower their products with #UGC - hit the DMs. Let's chat.

The real winning story on PalWorld isn’t the commonly shared narrative of small scrappy team stumbling on to making a massive hit (true in spirit), its point 3 below!! 1. they built their core passionate team with a mix of veteran developers AND up and comers, the undiscovered talent! 2. they built 5 games before making the landing with PalWorld (although Craftopia did 1M+ which is still huge) 3. the under rated move was the capital efficiency, they built with their core *small* team and once they had the capital to scale they brought in 4 professional co-development studios to scale and output the necessary content (in this case, several Keywords Studios subsidiaries and others). This last point no one talks about but it’s absolutely the way to do this. It’s a great way to use venture funding (live ops, infra, scale content production, operations). Of course publisher funding is available too but this actually can be quite expensive capital comparatively and publishers have tendency to meddle in the vision so choosing the right partner can be challenging.

The game industry right now is in flux. Every major studio has done #layoffs and there is no indication of when this trend will exhaust itself. However, I'd like to shed some light on how this problem will be solved. "1. Optimism, obsession, self-belief, raw horsepower and personal connections are how things get started." - Sam Altman The best thing you can do in the midst of uncertainty is to establish connections with others. Forces of nature will unite around each other, not big brands offering quarterly budgets and benefits. The best games of this decade have yet to begin development. The ideas and foundations of these games are being explored in social circles like Discord, LinkedIn, game dev meetups, and secret channels right now. The #gameindustry isn't dying. It's regrouping under new teams, new projects, and bolder visions of the future. Does this ring true for you? What social circles are you seeing rise out of these murky waters? Is the industry doomed to a cycle of dev -> release -> layoff -> repeat? https://lnkd.in/gfhRtaDt

Helping Gaming Leaders build High Flow 🎮 Organizations & Teams | Peak Performance 🚫 sacrificing Wellbeing | Coaching | Training | Workshops | Podcast Host
Leading a game studio is like playing a game on the hardest difficulty level. 🎮 The challenges come fast, the stakes are high, and every decision matters. Here are a few lessons I’ve learned from my time leading a studio that might help you win the leadership game: - Trust Your Team: You don’t need to control every detail. Let your team shine by giving them space to take ownership. Trust leads to more creativity and better solutions. - Flow Over Hustle: Long hours and constant hustle can lead to burnout. Instead, aim for flow—a state where work feels effortless. It’s not about working more; it’s about working smarter, staying focused, and enjoying the process. - Be the Guide, Not the Hero: You don’t have to solve every problem yourself. Support your team and let them find their own solutions. It’s more effective and keeps everyone motivated. Leading a studio can be tough, but with the right approach, it can also be incredibly rewarding. Want to explore how to lead with flow and trust? Let’s talk about how FlowMade can help you bring out the best in your team. #gameleadership #leadershiplessons #creativity #flowstate #teamwork #innovation

Are you interested in scaling your business successfully? Here's a key takeaway: Despite having over 3,000 employees at their peak, Zynga faced a 90% share price plunge due to its failure to adapt to the rapidly changing games industry. Staffing rapidly without a synchronized strategy can lead to heavy overheads and financial losses. Always align your team structure with current needs and projections, and only scale talent after capabilities are proven. I connect with people to generate meaningful shared experiences, support personal growth, co-create a better future, and have some fun while we're at it!
I've been thinking a lot lately about shared leadership and TRPGs that don't use the traditional model where the GM holds all the power across the fictional world, game mechanics, and social group dynamics, which is ripe for innovation. Thanks to the team at Gamenamic and to Jay Dragon for talking about their games with us! Exploring how power can be redistributed at any of these levels opens up fascinating possibilities for game and leadership design. Shifting core functions and responsibilities could lead to more dynamic and democratic gaming experiences. I'm actually thinking that these arent authority-less or GM-less systems, but Everyone is Responsible systems. It adds power and authority to different roles, not takes it away... It's exciting to rethink what leadership and authority mean in both game settings and real-world applications! #GameDesign #LeadershipDevelopment
Who’s in Charge Here? Playing Without a GM and Rethinking Authority At Gamenamic, we're fascinated by the question of authority in gaming systems—especially those that operate without a traditional Game Master (GM). These GM-less systems (or as some are starting to call them 'everyone GM's' aren’t just fun; they challenge our very ideas about leadership and control. Who needs a boss when everyone can lead? The answer isn't simple. 👥 Distributed Leadership: Imagine a game where everyone has a say, and decision-making is shared. It's like a team where every member is both a leader and a collaborator at different times. 🔄 Flexible Power Dynamics: In GM-less systems, the power dynamic is fluid and adaptable, encouraging players to negotiate and collaborate, reflecting modern, agile workplace environments. 🛠️ Tools Over Rules: Without a GM, players use tools and frameworks to guide the gameplay. This approach promotes a more democratic setting where the focus shifts from enforcing rules to empowering players. 🎭 Role Rotation: Everyone gets a turn to influence the game's direction, mimicking rotational leadership programs that allow team members to develop a broad range of skills and perspectives. 🗣️ Redrawing Boundaries: We had a great conversation with Jay Dragon at GenCon about redrawing the boundaries of traditional game roles. This discussion helped us further explore how power can be distributed differently across the three levels of RPGs: the fictional world, the game mechanics, and the social group. These principles aren't just applicable to games. They inspire us to rethink traditional hierarchies in the workplace, enhancing creativity, engagement, and collective problem-solving.
