Exploratory laparotomy. Right-salpingo oophorectomy. Omentectomy. Appendectomy. Pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection. This is what my cancer surgery looked like. It took me almost two years to really sit and comprehend what this all really entailed. In an exploratory laparotomy, the surgeons cut you wide open and then slowly pull everything out of your abdominal and pelvic area. They carefully inspect every corner and crevice of your body to check for signs of cancer. They remove everything they can. Then they put as much as they can back into your body. They take samples of tissue from anything that your tumor touched that could possibly have any signs of cancer. My tumor was almost a foot long in length and width. It pushed my stomach up into my diaphragm. It squished my intestines. It pressed down into my bladder. It was taking up a lot of space in my body. Cancer is like a mushroom. If you touch it, it spreads like mushroom spores. It's so important to remove the tumor whole when cancer is present to prevent further spread. I was so lucky that my cancer had not yet spread to the fluid within my giant tumor. None of this is something we wish for ourselves or anyone else. When we think about our intentions and emotions in life -- they're contiguous, too. That begs the question -- what intentions and emotions are you sharing with others? Can we share care, kindness, and empathy instead of insecurity, selfishness, and greed? Can we be the positive contagions in this world? Imagine if more of us were more intentional about what we carried into a space -- at home, at work, and in life. Be the positive change. How you choose to show up can be the change this world needs. A recent MD Anderson Cancer Center study shows staggering reoperation stats in #breastcancer cases. Overall reoperation rates for breast-conserving surgery (BCS) were 21% in females between 18–64 years old and 15% in females 65 years and older. Compared to women with IBC, DCIS patients had even higher reoperation rates: 18% vs. 31% (age 18- 64) and 13% vs. 24% (age 65+). Women aged 18-44 with DCIS and commercial insurance had the highest reoperation rate at 40%. These reoperation realities, on top of the rising incidence of breast cancer in younger women, shed light on the need for a solution to this pressing problem. https://lnkd.in/e4Cj88GT
